I am putting files on the Ki hard drive after outputting them as self contained from FCP.

What I meant by I could play the file but could not play it from Ki was; with the Ki hard drive seen from my computer, I could play the video clip (ProRes 1080), but that clip did not show up in the Ki menu for play back.

I’m on site now and learning a lot more about the box, and will follow up with more details next week.

    Thank for your feed back.

I know that you can plug it into any SDI spigot. What I was thinking was; why do I need an SxS recording mechanism on an EX1, get rid of it and replace it with the Ki Mini.

There were many Betacam & Iki cameras that were sold with the ability to attach to different Beta & DVcam recorder backs. I guess what I am really suggesting is an AJA Ki camera.

It would be interesting to see if something like that doesn’t show up at next years NAB. It will probably be something that RED will promise and we will see it delivered in 4 or 5 years 🙂

    Pity!

Perhaps in an upcoming version 🙂

    Thanks for the conformation.

I am using FCS3 and I have been importing SxS was via import Sony XDcam (XDCam Transfer).

When I open Log and Transfer I only get options for P2 & AVCHD. Is there an additional plug in for L&T that I haven’t downloaded (and if so could you point me to it), or is there a setting in the XDcam Transfer that I’ve overlooked?

Thanks for your hand holding in this matter.

    Bob,

I’ve had mine for a month or 2 from Spec Comm. Works great! What a relief to be rid of the Duel Adapter. Since the PCD2 uses 2 USB slots (1 for power & 1 for data) you might also consider having a powered USB hub.

Thanks for all of your insights. I own a Sachtler 18p that I’ve used for my Betacam rig and it was always the best. But things change. It’s always a comfort to hear from other Pros who appreciate the real world needs of job.

February 20, 2010 at 12:46 am in reply to: EX1R – SD not seen by log/transfer

As a follow up to my previous note; I spoke with the folks at Able Cine, and was told that what I had observed (Can’t see the SD files on the SxS card) was correct. That Sony was working on a patch for this problem, which we should see in a month or two.

In the meantime, I was told that the AVI files that can be found in the BPAV folder will In fact play in Final Cut, but I always had the option of trans-coding them to some codec that would be happier in FC.

Typically, I would not be concerned about shooting in SD, but I will be in a situation where fast turn around of interviews will be essential, and the DV format would require little or no rendering.

I was wondering if, not unlike HDV which can be brought in via FW directly to ProRez, can you do the same thing with the EX format? Or, I could always bring along the MXO2 and take the SDI out to whatever I want. This of course negates the whole don’t need to digitize work-flow.

Thanks in advance for your collective insights.

    Walter,

We are still fleshing out the specifics of this project, so nothing is set yet.

If we shoot the vignettes in NTSC, I would use my HVX200, 720pn, edit in FCP7 w/ pull down (29.97) and output in wmv. Playing the wmv file from a laptop to the projector. (If I have the time I would consider trans-coding to PAL (Episode 5.3), but the turn around time might be too short for the render process.)

I guess a question would be, will the projector/computer reset its refresh rate to accommodate the video? I have played PAL footage files (wmv, QT) on my laptop in the States and did not notice anything unusual.
I have not, however, hooked my laptop up to a projector and viewed the results.

The other plan would be to rent PAL gear there, edit PAL in FCP7 and master to tape or wmv and project.

The reason for shooting in NTSC; I already own the gear, and we might use the interviews for future projects. It would be more convenient to have NTSC back in the States.

    Thanks for any insights.

    Cheers,

    Jim

    Walter,

Thanks for your input; and I had planned to shot in 720pn.

However, since I would be playing back from a computer to a projector does the difference in (NTSC/PAL) frame rates matter? Won’t the computer & projector conform to the 29.97fps (w/ drop-down) of the original footage? Or is there something inherent in the European projectors (50hz power) that would force them to clock at 25fps?

    Cheers,

    Jim
