I downloaded streamclip. When I opened it up all I see is a square window with die image with five dots. Is that what I am suppose to see? I do not see any instructions or guidelines. There is a folder that says extras, when opened not much but about save as AVI.
What am I missing? I know this should be easy, but obviously not for me.

Drag video file and drop onto 5 dot square. It will turn back as video is loaded. Go to File and chose format. (ie quicktime) A new window will open. Select from drop down what format (make sure the quality is set to what you require – usually 100%). Hit make movie, give it a name and place to store and go.

    good luck,

    Jim

As with most Mac applications, a user guide/help file is available under the “Help” column in the top menu bar.
Available here is “MPEG Streamclip Guide,” also invoked by Command-?.
