In the bottom left corner (where the explorer is) you will see the “Video FX” tab. When you go there a menu will be on the left and the effect on the right. First select what you want, such as “Magic Bullet” looks and then the possibilities appear to the right. You can drag one of those effects to either the clip or the timeline. You should see the effect in the preview if the cursor is over the clip.

Download and run the file. It will search and see that you already have an earlier version installed. It will ask you if you want to update, say “yes” and the program will install what it needs to automatically.

I don’t like them either. They make it difficult (in my mind) to see what you are doing. I usually sort by type to avoid them and when they are too much, delete them while they are bunched.

But a note of caution: if you save more than one veg to that folder it will just dump all the data together — which sometimes is OK if you have a big project in several vegs.

Womble can save you a lot of work and it doesn’t degrade your footage. A lot of times I render mpg2 out of Vegas in several chunks and combine them to burn a DVD — like the 1:40 movie I’m doing is in 6 vegs. It does a great job of joining them and then writing the DVD files. I burn them with Nero. The controls are a little different. Download the manual with it.

Go to http://www.womble.com and download a trial of their bigger program. Womble will cut, edit, join mpg2 files WITHOUT reencoding (and, consequently, degrading them). Render just the new material to mpg2 (like your original) and then insert it where you want. Womble will also write it all to a DVD file which you can then burn with Nero.
Their program is often used to quickly edit TV shows captured by a computer to remove commercials, etc.

You could do it against any solid background like the clear sky. FX to Color Correction (secondary). Use the eyedropper to mark the background to be taken out, click “show mask”, make adjustment, turn off mask and then do the slider on the alpha.

If you buy a video card you should consider an Nvidia – about a 6600 is good – because Magic Bullet utilizes the processor on board the Nvidia to handle film looks and renders are much faster. Also, they handle two monitors AND have an svideo output for a TV. (I have a 7900 card but a friend talked to Nvidia and was told that a 6200-6600 was sufficient because he wasn’t into gaming.)
