video pass-through device besides DV cam? (on video card, maybe?)
Posted by Altidude on November 28, 2006 at 7:21 amSo I’ve finally got a powerful box to dedicate solely to editing. (Yay!) But I have a couple more things to do to get going:
* I still have to get a Firewire interface card for it.
* I expect to eventually want a video card that can drive 2 monitors.
* I’d like to also drive a TV for external preview without using my camcorder as a pass-through, if that’s possible. Can anyone recommend a smart & economical choice of peripherals here?
Is there a wonder-card that’ll do it all?Anoni Moose replied 19 years, 5 months ago 7 Members · 11 Replies -

November 28, 2006 at 2:43 pmCanopus does offer a card that has analog inputs while looking like a firewire connection. However, you might just want to get an external box like the Canopus ADVC series or the ADS Pyro. Those will have multiple inputs and convert it down to firewire. The box would replace your camera for this purpose.

November 28, 2006 at 3:34 pmIf you buy a video card you should consider an Nvidia – about a 6600 is good – because Magic Bullet utilizes the processor on board the Nvidia to handle film looks and renders are much faster. Also, they handle two monitors AND have an svideo output for a TV. (I have a 7900 card but a friend talked to Nvidia and was told that a 6200-6600 was sufficient because he wasn’t into gaming.)

November 28, 2006 at 4:17 pmBeware that SVideo out will not give you an accurate image. You must go firewire out for that.
As far as a video card, consider one with 2 DVI outputs as this will be a good option if you later step up to HD editing and want to use an LCD as a monitor for that purpose.

November 28, 2006 at 8:32 pmYes, either a firefire cabable monitor or via a dv to analog transcoder.

November 28, 2006 at 9:34 pmHmm. I’m a little confused on that point…
I’d have assumed that that if the Nvidea card has S-video outputs, and an external Canopus or ADS box has S-video outputs, the same digital-to-analog transcoding is being done either way — and that the external box simply gets the DV signal via firewire rather than being attached to the motherboard.
Am I missing something special about the conversion that an external box (or my camcorder) performs that an onboard card doesn’t do?

November 29, 2006 at 11:53 pmI have the Canopus AceDVio card (two of them) and it works great. Has both 4 pin and 6 pin firewire connectors, Svideo in/out and audio in/out via 1/8″ mini plug. I go Svideo out of this card right to my Panasonic 27″ tv/monitor. Works the same as the external boxes except you don’t have to hook up a firewire cable since it’s built in to the card. I don’t use the audio connectors since I have an Echo Mia with balanced in/out. I got my second one on Ebay just for a spare…brand new in the box for $175.

OK, this makes sense to me. That’s what I’d expect.
But I’m still confused about some of the other answers given here — maybe I need to do some studying so I can talk about this stuff more intelligently. I’m sure there’s a good book out there that would help fill my DV knowledge gaps… recommendations welcome… 😉
