Thanks, Douglas, but I’m not planning on the NAB this year. I have a friend going. Maybe I’ll ask him to attend. I’d like to hear the best ways to dampen.

If I need to reduce a sudden or sharp sound volume, I first drag over the sound to make a short region. Next, hit the “s” to cut that region into a separate clip. Then you can grab the top edge of the clip and pull it down. This leaves the loud sound still sounding like it belongs but reduced to a proper level. A sound man taught me this trick and I use it a lot – on doors, dropped objects, etc.

Sometimes at this point I find I have to reinstall Vegas.

Very true. Render the sequence and then pull #1,8,16,24, etc. This might be best because if a frame is smeared or jagged you could pull another good one near it. Pull only the best stills.
Drop all the stills into Photoshop, examine and then save the ones you want in a new number sequence. You could import that new number sequence if you liked as a clip. That would be your time-lapse. Loading each frame on the timeline would be your slide show.

AAF from Vegas to Premiere works well. I’d try it to FCP.

Magic Bullet does work in Vegas 8.

And remember you can shorten or lengthen a clip by holding ctrl and moving one end if you don’t want to cut something but want to squeeze it in.

Are you talking about sound files?

You have a lot of time to decide. It will be a while before there is a Scarlet and lots will be written about it before it comes out. But Vegas handles about as many formats as anyone. And depending on what you want to do, you might should at least look at CineForm. They will handle it for sure.
