  • Import DVD-R movie, add music, re-render/author without losing quality???

Posted by Dv Memories video on December 5, 2006 at 5:04 pm

Hello, I have several occasions where I need to make changes to some of the DVD-R movies that I make, and the only original material is already on a DVD.
When I import from that DVD into the Vegas timeline (Import DVD Camcorder Disc) and it saves the files as mpeg2.
If I were to make changes to the file, such as add titles or music or whatever, what would the process be so that the file is not compressed again?

Normally, when I finalize a project, I render as .avi, then export to miniDV tape for archival, then I bring in that avi to DVD architect to create my dvd. I’m not familiar with the process for rendering audio/video separate as m2v files and aa3 and all that, if that is necessary…

I would like to keep as good of quality as possible.

I have previously used Pinnacle Studio, and when I am working with mpg2 files, it does not recompress the file before burning the dvd, it just re-renders it with the same compression, as far as i know.

    Any tips would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Eric

There are programs that will let you compile Mpeg segments without re-encoding (Vegas is not one of them), but if you make any changes, like adding titles, it has to be re-encoded.

I realize that it is re-encoded BUT is it re-compressed like an avi would be? If it is simply re-encoded with titles/music fused together to recreate a new mpg2 file, I would think that it would NOT be recompressed again…

    It’s recompressed.

Gary is correct, it would be re-compressed.

    Bummer.
I guess once would not be that noticeable.
Probably the best idea would be to immediately export it to miniDV tape to preserve that quality for future changes (assuming that DVD is the only existing copy).

Now, I wonder what would give me better capture quality, to capture it “live” via S-Video as an AVI file, or to “import” the mpg2 from the dvd.

I’ve never compared them side by side.

    Thanks

The biggest advantage to capturing it “live” is that, as you said, you’ll end up with an AVI file which is much easier to edit than an MPEG-2 file.

If all you have is the DVD, then the best source is going to be the files on the DVD. Transcoding is not going to make it better.

I import from the DVD into Vegas 7 and then immediately render the imported file to Avi in the “Best” mode.

Go to http://www.womble.com and download a trial of their bigger program. Womble will cut, edit, join mpg2 files WITHOUT reencoding (and, consequently, degrading them). Render just the new material to mpg2 (like your original) and then insert it where you want. Womble will also write it all to a DVD file which you can then burn with Nero.

Their program is often used to quickly edit TV shows captured by a computer to remove commercials, etc.

I will check it out thanks. Sounds handy to have for a variety of issues.

Do you happen to know if Womble would allow me to add background music?
