Just for kicks, create a new sequence. Put a clip from the browser in it and say yes when it asks to conform to the clip’s properties. Post then what the sequence settings become.

I don’t shoot with that camera, but you should be able to select a clip, then type cmd+i to change the Open with option there. It should lose it’s VLC icon. (As that’s likely all that VLC changed with the clips). BUT I’m not sure what to set it to, so look at a clip that you didn’t open with VLC, and see what it’s set to open with… change the first clip to that and select the option to change all clips of that type to the new “open with” application. Might fix you up.

What are your sequence settings, and what were the properites of the source clips? Were they the same? All DV?

If you’ve transcoded all the source to ProRes the pixel aspect ratio should be square. Even if the originals weren’t square. If you render the footage it will look sharp, but if you get it all to the same format first, you shouldn’t have to render at all.
Check the clips in the Browser, Make sure they are all ProRes and the same frame size. FWIW 1440X1080 is a frame size for non square media… and should actually be 1920X1080 ProRes Square pixels after the transcode I think.

Trash your Thumbnail file. You’ll find where you’re saving them in the Scratch Disk Settings. If they aren’t offline, they’ll rebuild their thumbnails when you relaunch FCP.

From an investment point of view, Mac’s retain their value a lot better than PC’s. 3 year old Macs are selling for about 50% of their original cost. PC’s are doorstops by then pretty much. Mac’s aren’t as prone to virus’ as PC’s are. Not because they are better defenders, but because the market share is small enough to not attract the hackers as much. I do believe they cost of ownership is lower because of those two factors. Heck one day down from a virus can cost you. Let alone the resale value if you stay fairly state of the art.
FCP 7 will run on your computer for a long time I’d think yet. So it’s not as if it gets erased or something, It’s just that it won’t be further developed other than to run in Lion if it’s needs to be tweaked for that at all. Looks to me as if FCP 7 will run on the next generation of tech from Apple, so has at least a life of a couple of years on state of the art hardware and OS from Apple. For example I’m running it just fine on a new i7 MacBook Pro, so I don’t see why it wouldn’t run on the next gen tower. I also have a G4 tower running FCP 4.5 that in a pinch I could still use if I had to.
Avid, Adobe and Autodesk’s Smoke run on Macs, so it’s not as if there’s no other NLE software for Macs that will be continued to be developed. FCP X is a 1.0 release, and so has room to grow for sure. Maybe by the time you really can’t use FCP 7, FCP X will work for you or not. Either way, you’ve got some time I’d think.
Last time I checked, if you order a PC from a major manufacturer (Dell, Gateway, HP) it doesn’t cost less than an equivalent Mac… If you build it yourself, you can save some money, but you lose support from a single vendor that way.
One thing is for sure. I’ve never known anybody that switched to Mac from PC’s and didn’t prefer the Mac OS… don’t know many who went back to PC’s. The more I think about it, I don’t know anybody that went back to PC’s because they weren’t satisfied with the Mac’s experience. That says something about the situation too I believe.
Other than those statements, there’s no reason to run Mac’s.

Did you transcode the 7D clips to ProRes before you edited them into the sequence? If not, that’s the problem… H.264 clips (the original files) aren’t supported in FCP 6 or 7 for that matter.

No, I think you have plenty of computer… All of your media should be on a drive other than the startup disk (Mac HD disk)… also if your install wasn’t done cleanly, that might make a world of difference. (wipe the drive install the OS etc… and do it all clean) I do this about every 9 months or so, or any time I upgrade an OS or upgrade the NLE software, and it’s served me really well…
What is the format of the audio/video you’re working with? That could be part of the problem.

Well, the larger frame size of HD is 1920X1080 so I’m pretty sure that’s what the camera reporting the odd format name will shoot.
You could simply check it out a bit… make a shot with it, open it in QT and see what it actually is. Bet it’s the same as the other cameras…

What are the sequence settings of the sequence you’re sending to Color, what are the source clips’ properties, and what render settings in Color are being used?
