When you say no levels, you’re talking about the audio meters in FCP? Do they too cut out?

The files are h.264 based, and FCP 7 or earlier isn’t compatible with them. You need to use Compressor to transcode them to an editable format. As far as I can tell, Photobooth records SD footage, so try transferring your footage in Compressor to DV NTSC.
For what it’s worth, if you used QuickTime to record your movies, you’d get HD video from it..

Try exporting using FCP directly. file/export/using QT conversion…

You’ll need a way to feed the video monitor or TV set. With a Mac Pro, you’ll need either an external box or an inexpensive video card. AJA, Decklink, or Matrox all make external monitoring solutions. Least expensive is the Intensity card from Blackmagic Design.
You’d connect it to your Mac, (0r install the card version) and then connect it’s output to the input of your video monitor. Pro Monitors are indeed expensive, but with say a MXO product from Matrox, you can send color bars (blue only even) to a consumer TV set and calibrate the set with the control panel that the Matrox comes with. MXO mini would do the trick. I like the Samsung TV sets that are around 23″ and display 1080 pixel for pixel. They are about $300…

You need to create a custom preset for this. Go the audio/video settings and create a capture preset there from the capture preset tab, just duplicate the DV 48k setting and modify it. Should be DV NTSC but 32bit 16Khz for the capture preset.

Well, turns out I’ll have to wait on a source/record monitor. And in some cases I miss it. I’m quickly getting used to the single monitor though. But I was using Motion a lot, and other apps which only have a single player… so it’s not that foreign to me. Still, there are times a simple look at source/record makes an edit decision quick. There are those “audition clips”
Hey, FCP X has promise I think. Is it ready for all? Nope, but I expected this – noting it in the OP of this thread. Did Apple KILL these features? NOPE they just haven’t written the code yet for them. They can’t use any code much from FCP 7. Different computer language for starters… So they’ve “dumped” nothing. Other than the ability to open legacy project files. That they say, they couldn’t do.
They are just starting over here folks. LIke it or buy something else… don’t belly ache about how they’ve “screwed” you. They didn’t, and now that FCP 7 will definitely run in Lion, there’s no compelling need to dump FCP 7 today don’t think, I’ll bet that the next gen Mac Pro’s work with it too. Sure runs on my i7 MBP.
I think the best thing to do is sit tight, buy the 1.0 version of FCP X just to see some of the future, use it where you can, or learn Avid, Adobe or whatever. This product that is attempting to change the way we work for the better. Gotta say, it’s easier to learn than FCP 7. It’s cues from iMovie are OK by me. (after all same fellow oversaw iMovie 11 as well as Premiere, and FCP 1.) are useful IMHO. But in no way is this iMovie Pro, and it’s not written on that code base. It’s all new.

Select the clip in the sequence, then click on the transform button (found just under the viewer) add a keyframe (button shows up in the viewer), then move later in the clip to set where the expansion goes to by dragging on the blue buttons you’ll see around the clip, a keyframe will be added automatically.
