  • Customer MiniDV Audio Sample Rate Problem

    Customer supplied Mini DV tapes (shot on consumer camera) with a sample rate that is not 48khz. It seems that most of the setups in FCP are for 48khz. I also have many timecode breaks to deal with as well.

    My first question is: Can I capture these tapes through firewire? If so, what settings do I need to adjust to ensure that I don’t have audio sync. problems and such.

    Or, should I dub these tapes over and recapture at 48khz and also smooth out the timecode breaks. I really did not want to go through this process because it will take alot more time, but I will if it is the correct thing to do.

    Let me add that I do have a kona LH, but not sure how to capture that way. There is no s-video in, I don’t really want to use composite, component my be an option but I have had some problems with audio sync. because I don’t have a blackburst gen. Kona support says that some people do need one to keep sync.

    Anyway, all help will be appreciated, I almost never edit consumer shot material. Usually it’s my stuff or footage shot by other professionals. I can figure this out with some testing, however I know some of this forums folks already have the best solution in mind.

    You could capture using “non controllable device” to get past the TC breaks, but the resulting file’s TC will be incorrect… best to dub it via FW I’d think… if you do so, you won’t lose any quality cloning it that way. Capturing though FW shouldn’t cause any problems with sync either. DV is all 48khz audio except when recording 4 tracks of audio. (from a consumer camera, this is unlikely).

    All DV is 48k audio sample rate? I wonder why FCP tells me that the sample rate does not match the capture preset. The capture and sequence settings are NTSC DV with 48k audio. After capture, I get a warning that the clip audio sample rate does not match the preset.

    Also, I thought that DV consumer cameras can capture at 32K, but I could be wrong, can someone else chime in on this?

    If they support 4 track audio they do. It’s 32Khz 16bit setting for FCP if that’s what it is.

    During playback on the decks they should report the bit depth on screen if set to be so.

    It’s 32Khz 12bit. I just got a couple of tapes shot on MiniDV. I don’t know why that is the default on the Sony PD170. Then again, the shooters that I got the tapes from do not edit.

    I have not had problems with the sample rate in the past.

    You should set your capture preset to be 32Khz 16bit and you’ll be capturing it correctly.

    Hello Jerry. I am working with mini-DV. I was having the same problem (receiving that same error message about sample rate not matching source tape). For some reason though, capture presets does NOT give the option for 32Khz. It has every other option though. Additionally, when I play back the footage on my timeline, it looks and sounds fine….even though I’m receiving that error message. Is it safe to just keep doing what I’m doing?

    You need to create a custom preset for this. Go the audio/video settings and create a capture preset there from the capture preset tab, just duplicate the DV 48k setting and modify it. Should be DV NTSC but 32bit 16Khz for the capture preset.

    I could do with some help…

    I’m having trouble with audio out of sync in the FCP time-line when I digitise from both Mini DV (a Sony PC101 – set to standard 48k) and an AVHCD camera (a Sony PJ740 – set to 25fps and standard mode to match)

    The former is digitised using Log and Capture, the latter using Log and Transfer (set to convert AVHCD to Prores 422)

    I had suspected dropped frames as I’ve had a few messages, but this just be a glitch and not the cause of the main problem.

    I’ve searched the PJ740 manual, and googled for hours, but I can’t seem to find out what the audio sample rate is of this camera in stereo mode.

    Can anyone help?
