The terms of the license likely make it illegal. I’m no lawyer. Nor do I intend to swap serials or anything of the sort. You’ll not need to in most cases anyway. Caught in the middle? Buy from ebay or whatever. Just not going to be policed though. What a weird world we live in.
What’s moral/ethical and what’s legal are two different things. I don’t condone swapping it on legal reasons alone. So ethically you need to be legal. I doubt there’s room for an interpretation of the agreement that makes it null and void if the software is no longer supported.

It’s not as if Apple loses sales of FCS 2009 now if you were to swap serials… so where’s the moral dilemma over this? I mean, who are you stealing from? Can’t see the problem with this on moral grounds.. maybe somebody should explain that to me as I don’t understand something about it?

I think the current feature set satisfies about 3/4 of the actual users of FCP 7. Those not making a living from it. If you were Apple, and knew there was no way every feature of FCP 7 would be included in FCP X in time for this first release, you’d choose the features that the most people need, not the minority, right? Then fill in the blanks with updates and upgrades… That is exactly what happened IMHO. Hey, they don’t have to get to a “gold master” any more… they can upload new software daily if they wanted to. Feature by feature rather than complete sets of features like they were forced to do between FCP 6 and 7… all that’s gone now with the App Store distribution model. This is why Apple says the development will go faster than before I think.

It’s pretty stable here. I installed on the first day of release, before I read about the separate startup setups they say we should do. So it resides on the same disk as FCP 7. I’m stable here. Very stable, maybe I’m not pounding on FCP X hard enough yet. Just doing tutorials with it.
That said, I’ve got it on a current 17″ MBP, and an older 3 gig 8 core. Stable both places so far. But these are very clean machines. I’ll likely partition, and reinstall though. Hey it’s a lot faster than FCS 7 install from opticals…

We all know the only real dongle for FCP is a Mac. Maybe we could even get them to unlock already owned systems to be copied legally on any computer you or your company owns, dunno but extra seats will likely be available for quite some time on ebay I’ll wager.
Maybe they’ll update it fast enough that we don’t have to wait until FCP 7 just doesn’t run anymore. In the presentation they said they’d be updating it faster than before.
There is a roadmap I’m sure, and they will be adding or a third party will supply software to do what we must. If there’s a market, somebody is going to fill it. Some think it will be FCP’s competition. Some don’t. We’ll see. I like much of what I see in X. 64 bit, background renders et all. Facial recognition might even be in the cards with this new platform, they have it in the photo apps already… And that’s what it is a new platform. For starters, there has to be XML in the code of FCP X or Automatic Duck couldn’t have latched on to it… I believe they had that for sale within hours of FCP X’s release.
I seriously believe waiting and playing around with X for the cost of a nice dinner for 4 is a good idea if you can. And most can. For how long will be up to Apple, they say it will be faster. We’ll see eh?

Apple hasn’t trained anybody. Apple has been the most secretive company in tech for at least 20 years. Nothing new, and it’s not gonna change. If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen… that’s all I’m saying. They will never ever become as open as you’d like.. and from Apple’s point of view, it’s smart business. It has served them extremely well for years and years… hey 65B in the bank and no debt… They didn’t get there by saying Next years iPod will be this or that… otherwise they’d hurt the sales of THIS years iPod, right?
They are so secret there is a whole industry in rumor sites about the company. (don’t see that with the companies whose road map is public) It gives them so much publicity when they DO announce something. When a new product from Apple comes out they get so much free press it’s stupid… why? Because they don’t talk unless they are releasing something new. Nothing new there, and since they are and will continue to be extremely successful, I doubt they will change their M.O. If FCP X isn’t bought by anyone, and FCP simply dies, Apple’s revenues won’t miss a beat… we are a tiny portion of Apple’s base of customers. TINY… they’ll not be changing company policy for us… ever.
I battled with your problem for years until I realized it only raised my blood pressure. Give it up I said, and I’m a lot happier with the situation now. I just don’t care and look to history to repeat itself. Apple has a traceable history as we all know… that’s about all that can be counted on. History repeating itself with them… It did too. They came out with a preview at NAB and a release in mid-late June. They’ve done this many times with FCP… Then they updated it, upgraded it on a similar schedules… it will repeat most likely. We all know that there will be an iPhone 5, we all know there will be new Mac Pro’s soon because history with Apple repeats itself a lot.
