Odd… what are the properties of the source material, and what are your sequence settings?

Post more about your setup there. What drives does FCP have no access to that you do on the same mac?

You’re working on a LAN or are the media files locally stored? or? Also what codecs are you editing from and to?

Do buy a Pro, and not an Air… I’m amazed how fast the new i7 MBP’s are… very fast machines for laptops…

  • This QuickTime problem has been around for a very long time… It’s one of the reasons that Apple discarded it in FCP X. No longer a QT based app.

Aren’t there some additional presets in a folder named that? might be called “AJA additional presets’… it would be in your user library’s FCP User prefs folder. If not, just spotlight “Additional Presets” and they’ll show up if they are there with that particular product.

If not, don’t see any reason you can’t create easy setups yourself…

I don’t use MPEG Streamclip for much, but can you adjust the bit rate to match that of the setting in FCP’s export? If so, they’ll be the same size… But if it’s just low medium and high quality adjustments, the only way to make it smaller is to pick Medium or Low over high.

Was this the same camera that shot the tape? Try that if not.

It sounds like you have a tracking problem with that camera’s tape… so using the same camera may help here. If it’s off enough, you’re likely outta luck. One thing that I’ve seen happen is folks reusing consumer tape… that is a big no no… if you use the pro tape, you can re record a bunch, if not, you shouldn’t…

If you can get a camera or deck to simply play the tape, you could dub it to your other HDV device and use the dub to capture into FCP… that might straighten out a problem caused by a tracking error in the recording.

Lastly, I’ve seen reseating graphics cards fix this… but only if you’re on a tower of course.

CalDigit makes some compelling drives… look there for sure.

That USB drive is great for a backup drive but that’s about it.

You need to also understand that if you formatted a FW drive to be Mac OS extended, it will be fast on a Mac, but not on a PC. The alternative is to make if PC formatted, but that will slow it down on the Mac. Either way a sort of emulation has to happen to be cross platform… so pick your poison.

There’s more to scrubbing than just drive speeds. GPU’s matter too. Especially with the more modern software. (FCP 7 NOT particularly affected, but is to some extent). All other NLE’s (Avid, Adobe, Apple, and Autodesk) all rely on GPU power for a lot of their fluid behavior to be really fluid.
