You can, but bear in mind the speed of your connection to an external drive – firewire would be your best option.

Your ideal scenario would be to have three drives if your budget allows it.

One drive (your C) would hold the OS and other progs. Another drive for capture and edit and the third for rendering. You will get better results in rendering speed wise.

I would use the Canon as a B roll camera and the vx2000 as my main. The vx is going to give better results.

You are going to possibly have an issue with color/exposure matching in post. Be sure to WHITE BALANCE BOTH BEFORE and during our shoot – especially inside and outside and as the lighting changes. The consumer cams tend to sometimes shove gain into the equation as lighting decreases – watch out for that one.

Just read this part of the KB article:

Additional updates are available to optimize performance and behavior on computers that are running Windows XP SP2. Without these updates, computers that are equipped with these power management-capable, mobile, dual-core processors may experience decreased performance or unexpected behavior.

I have found this hotfix on the net, loaded it, and have seen a 12% increase in render speed on my Intel machine!!!!

Why do they hide these things from us. According to MS, the KB also mentions:
Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem

Can do in Vegas. Haven’t done this myself but two video tracks should do the trick – or more depending on the amount of sliders you would want to animate, for example, or simulate a graphic equaliser.

Top track(s) would have your slider image(s) to which you would apply key frames as the music changes to move your slider up and down.

The video track below would containing the static image of your equaliser. Just remember that your slider(s) images would have to be done in a PNG format or similar using a program that supports these kind of images – eg. Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro

Jeremy, you said, “I am biased against the Blackmagic since what I have read so far hasn’t impressed me.” Is it just that it was not impressive or have you heard some negative feedback on the cards? Also, can you monitor the HDV on a 720 monitor even though it’s not pixel for pixel?

Remember, this was a personal opinion and I am in no way knocking this card. The BM cards are rather specific on their PC requirements and that bothers me a bit. I don’t want to build a new PC just to meet a cards’ spec!! Just remember, the card does not accelerate your render process.

My belief is to try and future proof yourself as much as is possible in this ever changing technology world and maybe I’m trying too hard! But I’m damn sure gonna give it a good bash.

If all your external to Vegas settings are okay, you need to specify within Vegas what device you are using and also arm your track for recording if this is what you are trying to do.
