  • The fortunate part is that people in PAL countries will be able to read and play a NTSC dvd without any problems. The same cannot be said for the reverse though

Is the Firewire port you are using on the mobo??

Many users have encountered problems with onboard firewire – myself included. Normally adding an additional PCI firewire card solves a lot of the hassles

October 29, 2006 at 1:27 pm in reply to: Do I really need a RAID-0??

I have used RAID 0 on my machine until just recently.

I changed a few of the hard drives and decided to go back to a JBOD config. I saw no significant advantage of RAID0 on a standard XP machine so see no reason to continue with it.

Other may have varying opinions on the matter

    a. can i downconvert 1080 to 720p in camera (sony that is), if not, where do i convert?

    b. can i play / edit 720p direct on the timeline, or do i have to use an intermediary?

    b. can i play out hdv tape from my dsr11 (i don’t mean view, just firewire transfer)

    c. have you played with vv7?

    all the best,

    leslie

    A. You won’t be able to downconvert in camera with a Sony to 720p. You’ll still get interlaced footage. What you can do is use something like COnnect HD from Cineform to do the conversion for you as you capture.

    B. 720p should be no problem on the timeline. With Vegas 7 – you are assured of no problems (obviously system dependant)

B? Again. Haven’t tried this but I don’t think the dsr11 will read hdv tapes. Its a sd recorder!

    C. VV 7 will give you a lot of latitude when dealing with HDV. Personally, it was one of the single reasons I upgraded. I can run multiple trasnport streams on the timeline without any frame rate degradation.

You can safely assume that there is a +/- 10% dead area on widescreens.

What I have found is that it differs slightly from set to set. That would most likely be the result of the decoders in each set.

  • You have a couple of options open to you.

One would be a ADVC110 from canopus for DV work (got firewire input from PC to a RGB or S/video output) or if you do plan to go HD, a AJA card or Blackmagic card for ingesting

You will probably find most users use some form of workflow enhancing tools – specialist keyboards, shuttles etc etc.

The issue is, you won’t know until you have tried it. I for one never use the trimmer for editing – I find the concept painstaking and have adjusted my workflow to edit on the timeline – but thats me!

A lot of users have the Shuttle pro. I have but also have a Bella keyboard with built-in shuttle and I now have the Shuttle Pro gathering dust on the shelf.

October 2, 2006 at 8:04 pm in reply to: Upgrade from 5 to 7 – Will it be seamless?

Vegas 5 and 7 will co-exist happily on the same machine.

Personally, I would start any new projects with 7 and finish the projects started in 5 with Vegas 5. Vegas 7 project files are not backwards compatible when saved. IOW, Vegas 5 will not open a 7 file but Vegas 7 will open a Vegas 5 file. When saved in 7, only seven and above will read the .veg file.
