  • Upgrade from 5 to 7 – Will it be seamless?

Posted by Dave Petteruto on October 2, 2006 at 6:19 pm

    Hi All,
I will be upgrading from Vegas 5 to 7 soon. I have a couple of current projects in the works and don’t want to have problems with them because of the upgrade. Is the change going to be fairly seamless or will I most likely have issues/problems? Because of projects constantly comming in, there is really no clean time available for the change. If there is anything I should look out for I’d really appreciate the heads up. Also I currently do not have the sony “DVD” software, so that will also be added in with the upgrade.

    Thanks in advance
    Dave P.

done it, inclu upgrade US2 – no problems at all.

already had .net 2.0 so didn’t have to install it, but never had probs with .net before anyway.

    just remember

    1) can have BOTH versions on same machine

    2) all v5 vegs that you open in v7, immediately Save As.. eg Project 36 v7 – once you save a veg in v7, can’t open it again in v5.

Vegas 5 and 7 will co-exist happily on the same machine.

Personally, I would start any new projects with 7 and finish the projects started in 5 with Vegas 5. Vegas 7 project files are not backwards compatible when saved. IOW, Vegas 5 will not open a 7 file but Vegas 7 will open a Vegas 5 file. When saved in 7, only seven and above will read the .veg file.

If you want to finish your projects in v7, take a backup of your v5 project files before you get started. Then you can safely open them in 7 and save them too. If something (against the odds) goes wrong, you have the original v5 project files and you are not a dead man 🙂

After upgrading will I have two full versions of vegas (5&7) or one version (7) on the computer? I was under the impression that version 5 would not longer exist after the upgrade to 7.

    Thanks for all the info.

You will have TWO versions if you install Vegas 7 without uninstalling Vegas 5. In fact, you’ll still be able to use Vegas 5 AND Vegas 7 at that point. I have a machine with Vegas 4, Vegas 5, Vegas 6, AND Vegas 7 all installed right now. The installation of newer versions is non-destructive to older versions.

Thanks for the info. I like the way that works-being able to have more than one version on the machine at a time.
