There’s new render settings that are burined within FCP. open your sequence settings (cmd-0) and hit the video processing tab. You’ll notice under the motion filetering quality header, there’s a drop down menu with three choices. Normal is the default, you also have fastest (linear) and best. Fastest is what FCP 4.5 used (and couldn’t be changed). Change the setting to fastest (linear) and do the same test and see if it speeds up.

Report back because I’d like to know the answer as well.

Cool. Now back up (duplicate) that project right now. And send it to a CD-R, firewire drive, a lock box, anywhere. That way your panic level will stay down if this happens again.

Commence duplication.

I think I forgot to tell you to uncheck “include master clips outside selection”

I do this process fairly often for uprezzing (i wouldn’t say all of the time) and it works fine for me.

Media100 had the most elegant offline/online workflow that I have worked with. The FCP workflow is just different and you will have to start thinking different than you did with Media 100. As a whole, FCP has brought much more creative joy than Media100 did though, but that’s a different discussion.

Fred, that’s the best decision you’ll make. Edit your client’s projects with FCP5, and do you stuff with FCP 4.5. Also, you will be installing everything correctly as a fresh install, instead of upgrading the OS & FCP. You will also begin to see that you don’t need to be so scared of FCP5/tiger.

You can most definitely mark on the fly, I just don’t think holding down the i key is the way to go as it will trip up FCP. If you feel it, hit i once and fine tune later using the s key (or slip function), or use any other myriad of ways to trim your clip. What resolution is your video?

You’ll find them in there under FCPUncompressed or something like that.

Select (single click) your edited timeline. Create an offline project in the media manager using the settings you need (dv, 8-bit uncompressed, whatever).

be sure to uncheck or deselect the “include affiliate clips outside selection”

also make sure the “delete unused media from duplicated sequences” is checked or selected.

this will create a new project with a timeline and the associated (edited) clips.
