  • Weird playback problem when holding “Mark In” key

Posted by David Bertman on August 2, 2005 at 1:48 am

I have a problem that I’m wondering if anyone else has had, or better yet, found a solution for:

When I am playing a clip and I hold down the “i” (mark in) key on my keyboard it first makes the clip jittery and then if I continue to hold it down it actually stops the clip from updating in the canvas window (although the blue bar is still moving, so the clip is obviously playing even though I cant see motion).

I am using a dual 2 Ghz G5 with 4 Gigs of RAM so I doubt its a RAM or processor issue. The clips are digitized to a G-Tech 800 GB RAID drive (connected to the Firewire 800 connection) so I dont think its a clip/connection issue. The drive is also less than half filled (and, brand new, so I dont think its a fragmentation error).

I am not running any other programs, and in fact have rebooted to clear the buffer, but again, same issue. I am on FCP 5.0.2 with Tiger 10.4.2.
If it matters I am using a Bella-USA EX keyboard,

    Has anyone experienced this??

    Thanks,

    Dave

And why are you holding the mark in key again?

In editing doing a “mark on the fly” is quite common. That way you can “feel” when the cut should occur.

You can most definitely mark on the fly, I just don’t think holding down the i key is the way to go as it will trip up FCP. If you feel it, hit i once and fine tune later using the s key (or slip function), or use any other myriad of ways to trim your clip. What resolution is your video?
