You should post this in the Blackmagic Forum as well.

  • I don’t have first hand experience with HDV, but it is my understanding that while the Kona 2 takes some processing off of HDV, the i frames still need to be reconstructed at cuts/dissolves before a final output to tape. This is one of the hinderances with working in the Mpeg-2 GOP based HDV codec.

  • Awesome. Thanks for the answer.

Don’t forget the analog SD and HD INPUTS on the LH and not on the Kona2. These are also significant changes.

While we are dreaming, how about a hardware accelerated codec that supports alpha channels and ‘fixes’ the YUV-RGB color space problem when working with material rendered out of AE. Something like an RGB QRez, except with alpha channels.

A cheap tri-level sync would be cool too.

  • Hey Gary,

Does that mean render out of AE to 10 bit, then have FCP transcode the footage into whatever codec you are editing in (such as 8 bit), or are you suggesting that we capture/edit in FCP (and of course do subsequent renders from AE) with the AJA 10 bit codec?

September 13, 2005 at 9:19 pm in reply to: KL Box. What for?

the Kl box will give you a set of RCA analog outputs for audio monitoring if you are so inclined to use them. Some people prefer to have a box to plug all of their stuff in, but if you have a patch bay that will handle SDI & AES this will act as your kl box. Some people do not like the snake that goes form your computer to the patch bay, the kl box tidies this up with two DVI style cables that run to the kl box. I think it really depends on what you need in your suite and how much patching and cabling is needed.

September 13, 2005 at 4:09 pm in reply to: PAL to NTSC

I do not think the io is a standards converter, but you can use a filter from Graeme Nattress that will convert your PAL timeline to NTSC. I’ve done this before (except from NTSC to PAL) and it works great. http://www.nattress.com Click on the standards conversion tab. The render times might take a while depending on length of your program and your machine, but it’s well worth it to have the control.

September 12, 2005 at 7:00 pm in reply to: No firewire output on Kona LS

Yes, you can, but you have to choose to monitor the Kona or your DV deck. If you use the FCP DV easy set up your firewire ports should be active with the FCP dv signal, if you choose to monitor using the Kona 8 bit to dv easy set up, your kona card will be active and you can monitor that way.

If you have recently upgraded to Tiger and did not do a clean install, check this article:

    https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852

This might be your problem as well.
