You can tack on the io LA and use that as a stand alone video router (and also as another analog capture device for FCP if you need it on a laptop or whatever). It has standard S-Video, component, composite, balanced XLR outputs. It may make a difference for your output needs.

Those kind of situations are how I got my start into FCP with v3 and a 667 powerbook, doing the exact same jobs your are talking about doing. I would recommend getting yourself a Biggerdisk extreme or Medea GRaid fw 800 raid so you can work faster. THere’ll be less rendering and more editing (until final output) and then you can even bump up to DV50 if need be. You’ll appreciate the power and speed when you are editing those smiling faces under the break neck deadlines those types of jobs lend themselves to. I would also suggest the 17″ as you’ll miss the real-estate on a 15″. The 17″ is not that much more of a hassle to carry around, just get yourself a nice rolling carry case/backpack/brief case that fits the 17 and you’ll be good to go. I know you want to be nice to your client and save them some money, but get the fastest mac you can possibly get. Perhaps you should check out some refurbs that come with the standard warranty and you might even be able to upgrade to the extended warranty for $300 bucks or so (out of your pocket, not your clients). Good luck in your travels and buy the fastest mac you can. you won’t be disappointed, and either will your client.

As long as you keep everything on separate partitions, you’ll be fine. Ideally, you should get yourself another internal ide drive and do a fresh install of 10.3.9/FCP 5 on that. You’ll be surprised at how much these new apps hog up gigabytes.

If you’re sure the config is correct, call aja and they will promptly switch out for a new one. If your io at home works, why don’t you bring that in to use in the meantime?

This tutorial will teach you to modify the v wipe transition and make a 100 band v wipe. Once you have made that v wipe, all you have to do is modify that start and stop positions of the transition to where you like it (say start at 89% and end at 89%) and then you’ll have it.

Okay, you definitely have a settings issue as the frame buffer should be 720p DVCPRO HD 59.94.

Do as I said above, use the Kona 2 easy set up I described to get everything jiving.

Now, open the control panel and click on the format tab and make sure the primary (native) format is 720p59.94 and change the secondary (converted) format to 525i29.97. Also, choose whether you want a letterbox, anamorphic, or crop down conversion in the “down:” dropbox. CLick on the “analog out” tab of the control panel and click the secondary (525i29.97) radio button. A downcovert node should come up on the diagram above and you should be good to go.

Was that export a reference or self contained? If it’s a reference you are still playing the movie off of your lacie drive.

Hit control-q and choose the AJA KONA 2 720p 23.98 DVCPRO HD Varicam easy setup. This should jive with everything provided that you did in fact capture in the DVCPRO HD codec. What are your settings on the Kona control panel?

Check and make sure your drives are running well, and also, you should render all video & mix down your audio. Select all (apple-a) then hit option-command-r to mix down audio.

Check out the io LA. it will have all of the analog ins and outs, plus it will remain portable and more stable than your canopus. the price is just over $1000. It is an outboard capture device tethered to the computer by a single firewire cord. This allows for you to take it on the road with you or across the room to another computer. They also have a control panel that allows you to access a proc amp for all of your VHS captures. Pretty swett little box and well worth the money. Good luck in your purchasing decisions.
