I’m assisting on a DVCPRO HD feature. When we play a sequence using Digital Cinema Desktop, the sequence plays without a hitch within FCP. However, whenever we try to downconvert to SD using Kona 2, the audio seems to stop and get behind the video. The sequence would then play out of sync or FCP would stop it with a dropped frame alert. We’re using the analog and component outs from the KBOX to DVCAM. The Mac G5 2.5 sound preferences are set to the Kona card. (We’ve tried the other settings with no luck.) Sequence preset: DVCPRO HD 720p 23.98 8-bit. Playback preset: DVCPRO HD 720p 59.94 8-bit 1280×720. Refreshed AV devices. Mirror display: off. Unlimited RT: off. Mixed tracks: 4. Audio offset: 0. We’ve even loaded the beta Kona 2 driver not yet released. Where’s the problem: the Kbox, Kona2, or my computer? Currently we only have 2.5 gigs of ram and the show is on a 500 gb Lacie firewire drive. It captured fine and, again, plays back fine using Digital Cinema Desktop. Any suggestions? Thanks.

This sounds like a drive speed issue. if that drive is fairly full it might not be able to handle what you are throwing at the Frame buffer on the Kona 2 Card. This should work fine.

Check and make sure your drives are running well, and also, you should render all video & mix down your audio. Select all (apple-a) then hit option-command-r to mix down audio.

I’ve exported a 15-minute sequence to a clip on one of my internal SATA drives. I still have the problem. Is there any other way I can troubleshoot the Kona card and Kbox? I think I’ve got a mismatch on one of my presets.

Was that export a reference or self contained? If it’s a reference you are still playing the movie off of your lacie drive.

Hit control-q and choose the AJA KONA 2 720p 23.98 DVCPRO HD Varicam easy setup. This should jive with everything provided that you did in fact capture in the DVCPRO HD codec. What are your settings on the Kona control panel?

The export is self-contained and plays fine when opened in a QuickTime player (at HD resolution). The Kona control panel shows 525i29.97 in the frame buffer, Comp SMPTE analog out. I thought I found the problem when I jiggled the connection behind the Kbox, but it went out of sync about 8 minutes in (the longest it played correctly.) I think I’ve tried about every preset combination. Could RAM be a factor?

Okay, you definitely have a settings issue as the frame buffer should be 720p DVCPRO HD 59.94.

Do as I said above, use the Kona 2 easy set up I described to get everything jiving.

Now, open the control panel and click on the format tab and make sure the primary (native) format is 720p59.94 and change the secondary (converted) format to 525i29.97. Also, choose whether you want a letterbox, anamorphic, or crop down conversion in the “down:” dropbox. CLick on the “analog out” tab of the control panel and click the secondary (525i29.97) radio button. A downcovert node should come up on the diagram above and you should be good to go.

Sorry, Jeremy. I misspoke when I said the frame buffer was at 525i29.97 (the control was on “Mac Desktop”). When FCP takes control, the frame buffer is at 720p59.94. And I still have the audio problem. After troubleshooting with Clark and Rudy at AJA, we’re going to swap out the Kbox and proceed from there. If you or anybody else comes up with another solution, I welcome your thoughts.
