  • DVCPRO50 issue with FinalCut and BMD DExtreme

    Hi,

I have some issues with 3 identical workstations.

Problem: when we try to batch capture long clips (30 min or more) using BlackMagic DV50 easy setup, The FinalCutPro stops the capture a few minutes before the out point. Capturing the same clip in Uncompress works OK.

Cofiguration: PowerMacG5 DUAL 2.7, 4GB RAM, 160GB and 250GB sata, Blackmagic Decklink Extreme, MacOS 10.4.2, QT 7.0.1, Decklink driver 5.1, FinalCutProHD 5.0.2 and Sony Msw-M2000. The three workstations are identical.

Actions: I have reinstalled everything and tested every step (QT 7.0, BMDriver 5.0, etc) and the problem continues. I used the Blackmagic Deck Control to capture and it works perfectly, but this software does not have the DV50 setup in its preferences.

Some extras: we have noted a difference between the duration field of the browser and the media length on the batch capture first window. It seems like in the browser math is not the same as the batch capture math. Examples: Clip in: 00:58:49;28 out: 01:28:45;05 duration browser: 00:29:55;08 duration in media length 00:29:53;14. Real Stop Point of the Capture 1:24:41;11

Thanks in advance for any help.

Is there a good reason you are not capturing DV via firewire? I own an Extreme card, but when it comes to DV material, I much prefer firewire as it carries audio, video, and timecode.

i think this is an issue of capturing using the Decklink card to compress to a codec of choice … not of capturing “DV” as such.
DVCPRO50 is an excellent compressed 8 bit format with great picture quality comparable with digibeta, and a low data rate suitable for giving good performance with NLE’s.

also, realistically speaking, our DVW-A500P’s do not have a firewire interface hence capturing via firewire ios moot … does the MSW-M2000 have a firewire interface?

Yes, we decided to use DV50 because it saves us disk space.

    The MSW-M2000 does’t have iLink.

I think we have to start all over again and perhaps try with an other VTR.

    Muchas Gracias a los dos!!!!!

You should post this in the Blackmagic Forum as well.

I have been having a similar problem with a Pipe Studio setup on a G4 with FCP 4.5 and OS 10.3.8. I can only digitize 10 minutes at a time to the DVCPro50 codec or it errors out. So I just upload in 10 minute chunks.

In general the DVDPro50 codec is excellent, but somewhat unreliable, and I agree the Aurora uncompressed seems to give better, more consistent results.
