LOL! We edit and distribute 110-140 hours of content every eight week semester. We do pretty well on the small staff we have. But I’ve automated a lot of work and the SAN is essential to our operation.

Thanks for the comments, Tony. I’m actually trying to kill two birds here. I want to capture to a codec that can be interchanged on the PC as well and still be in a compressed format. Uncompressed isn’t an option. Our 12TB SAN just isn’t big enough to handle all of the video at uncompressed rez.

Actually, I’m kind of liking the FCP 5 / Panther combo, myself. Had to upgrade to QT 7, but it all seems pretty solid for now. Just now getting into the Multicam features on a complex project. So, maybe that project will be telling of any shortcomings.

I find that this happens only after leaving my system on overnight. If I do leave it on overnight, I restart the Mac before working on any projects. That works for me. Haven’t tried just logging out and back in. That seems to work for some of our SAN problems.

  • So is this upgrade only for Tiger users? Only for FCP5 users? Who is it for exactly? I’m sure there is a readme file that explains everything. But you know how many people actually read those! 😉

I can’t go to Tiger yet because of our SAN. Does anyone run this combo on 10.3.9? So far everyone here seems to be on Tiger already. Anyone?

Wasn’t easy to find this, but it’s worth a free try for scratch removal. In theory, it should work for any stationary inclusion.

Could use the clone tool in AE, but a plug in for FCP “would” be easier, I’m sure. Otherwise, you’re going to have to resample the clone brush every few frames. Yikes! Sorry, but that’s all I could think of without having a proper plug in.

FWIW, I do most audio editing in an audio editing package – not FCP. To date, I’ve been using Peak. However, with the new Suite, I’ll likely be moving to Soundtrack Pro soon. The advantages just appear to be too great to ignore.

We’re researching XSAN and SANmp for now. They seem to be the only cross-platform possibilities – important for us working in a Windows shop with Mac editors. No cecision was made yet. But those are the ones we’re looking at for now. We’re coming from ImageSAN, btw, which is also being updated to include cross platform support. However, their prices have gone up! I don’t get that from a marketing standpoint in this business.
