Whatever is in the Viewer is a ‘raw’ generator. It works in HD, SD, etc. It doesn’t know how to deform itself, until it’s on the timeline.

You system isn’t an anamorphic system – just the timeline is. Yes, I know, it’s a bit odd, but we just learn to accept and move on.

You have the correct solution. If you want a generator that’s always right – try dragging the text generator FROM THE TIMELINE to the browser or favorites folder. You now have one that is set correctly

I’m unclear – are you saying you have two streams of video that you ant to have play at the same time?
What format are each of the QuickTime files in?

Basically, what we want, is both of them at the same codec + frame rate.

Part of it David is FCP, most of it, is that HDV has lousy, long GOP frames (but I know you know this.) This is why I suggested capturing the whole tape.

With HDV, I just capture the whole tape via capture now and then treat it as file based material. I just don’t trust HDV, even with good shooting practices (like 6+ sec preroll for shooting.)

Just hit capture now, and walk away. FCP will find the gap, backup about 4-5 times, jump the gap, increment the tape name, and continue. Painful to watch, but works.

Short story. Boot on your OSX DVD. Install to an external HD, OSX. Update to 10.6.6.
Then, insert your FCS 3 DVD. DESELECT all the Motion/DVDSP/STP templates (yields a very fast install.)
Total process less than 2 hrs. Probably closer to 1.
Run software update until it’s all up to date.

Now, with your project on an external drive, see if this works.
If it does, something specifically is wrong with your install.

Tony, I agree with you. But until you isolate what is causing the problem, then we have to/should eliminate everything else, to see if we can find out the culprit.

I think you have something that is running in the background, eating up either processor cycles or VM to such a degree that it’s causing your system to stutter.

Typical culprits, are Browsers (especially flash), Background Rendering (Compressor and AE). I’d be curious to look at your VM of your activity monitor when your system starts to stutter; both at the Page Outs, Swap size and what app is eating away at the processor.

It could be (but I doubt) that it’s something that you at one point installed, removed and forgot about, that is leaving a trace.

I admire your humility, but I’ll not say you’re a dummy. We never know who is on the other end of the screen.

Meanwhile, yeah, this is a series of rapid cuts, with some keyframing of both scale & position.
Here’s what I’d do to ‘nail’ this. I’d download this off of youtube, and step through the frames. Each cut, I’d write down a description (like, shakes up and down+pushes in.) This series of shot descriptions will tell you exactly what to do in final cut pro.

You’re not really going to find a ‘here’s how to do this’ beyond that – because each cut utilizes some slight variations. Although, yeah, it might make a good article (with the right footage.) Two keys – there were multiple takes of this and the DP kept the actor in the same general place in the frame.
