According to NVIDIA specs it has CUDA engine.. so it should be fine.
However the question is with single drive how will you get sustained data? So unless you are planning to upgrade to RAID you may not see real time playback and fluid editing experience even for HDV/DV.
At least I would get a second sata drive for DATA.
I would get 1.5TB/WD RE4 drive… so in case if you want to upgrade RAID0 or 5 later on, you will be able to use it. It has almost same performance as 10K drive.

IF you want to get Dell then consider precision work station where you have option to upgrade memory/Quadro FX video card/etc…
However it will be more expensive…check out HP laptops also.

Do not buy PC/Laptop without meeting minimum requirements as you will not see performance gain without N Vidia card with CUDA engine.
You may also wants to see nvidia site to verify if the card you are considering has CUDA engine…(Adobe calls Mercury engine which makes specific api calls to CUDA)

If you are planning to do editing for living then go with Avid/Apple.
There are not may editing jobs offered for Premier as compare to other two unfortunately… However for wedding Ppro is more then sufficient.

The licensing issue is a myth…because DVCPRO50/HD is a SMPTE standard. That’s how other vendor without entering the licensing agreement with Panasonic has developed support for DVCPRO50/HD. So it must be a ROI/technical issue for Adobe to implement native support.

  • It’s more like is there a feature that you can’t live without? If you need it, then how much price you are willing to pay?
Up to last year I was religiously updating to new vers reading those reviews and articles that tell us how it will improve your work flow. Finally I realized that this is 95% marketing and 5% substance.
I haven’t upgraded this time and, will wait until they provide P2/DVCpro50/HD native support that I really need. Until then no more updates. So far it hasn’t affected any of my work!!!
In you case this may not be the case so start with analysis of your own requirements, feature that you need to perform the job. Also look at the alternative like Avid, Sony and if you are familiar with Mac side then FCP before throwing away your hard earn money.
Anyway before/during NAB most of them will announce new ver so if you can just wait until then…

It’s not possible for 32-bit app to use more memory because you are running under 64 bit OS. The fact is 64 Windows OS create a 32bit virtual OS space and it’s still limited to 2GB of process memory limit just like 32 bit OS. Don’t buy more then 4GB of RAM, unless program is written ground up in 64 bit for 64 bit OS. Buy something more useful with that cash like better/Bigger Video/Raid controller.

You will see better performance due to Intel

June 28, 2007 at 8:05 pm in reply to: Aja or Matrox: which is best choice for PPro CS3?

AJA does NOT support DVCPRO 50/HD or P2 natively since PPro is not supporting it. You will need to capture it in either one of the uncompressed format bebore you will be able to edit it.
On other hand Matrox does support it.
Be sure to look into this and other specific needs for you before buying either.

Advantages will be for process intensive task, running multiple
applications like AE/Photoshop and MPEG encoding.
You will NOT see any advantage for memory intensive tasks. Also to take advantage of the CPU power be sure to get a Raid controller (hopefully PCIe based) for faster I/O so your CPU can be feed with data.

As far as editing is concern in PPro CS, it remain to be seen as advantage will be totally depending upon how Adobe implemented it. I mean just re-compile with extension for new processors or re-wrote the code to make it multi tasking(which I doubt as it requires lot of resources).
However in any case you will be better off then now.

June 26, 2007 at 6:41 pm in reply to: Premiere did not return frame error on mpeg export

When I got this error, I rebooted PC and without doing any thing I stated encoding. Try and see if works for you. However This is iffy.

Other alternative I use is export DV AVi, or import project in AE and rander as uncompressed AVI file. Imported this output file in Cinema Craft SP(which is better encoder anyway)and encode for multipass VBR.
