As much as i love particle illusion, the problem with using its gun fire is that if your gun isn’t pointing at an angle that matches the library, you’ve got to start doing all sorts of things.
For quick, easy gunfire i use vector paint on a black solid set to color dodge or similar transfer mode. Basically, on the frame of your shot, draw a jagged ‘explosion’ oover the gun barrel. Make sure the vector paint playback settings are set to ‘current frame’. Then move one frame forward, and draw a smaller, but still as jagged new flash. And that’s it.
When you play the sequence back you get a nice, quick, undistracting shot. How detailed you make the flash is up to you, but as it only last two frames it doesn’t really matter.
I came up with this way of doing it after watching a couple of movie sequences on freeze frame.
