November 6, 2005 at 8:27 pmI am looking for the similiar effect. I have Particle Illusion and just found one of the emitter libraries has gun fire emitters. You might hop over to the Particle Illusion forum on the cow or the PI website(www.wondertouch.com) and check out the libraries to see if it fits your needs.

November 7, 2005 at 8:54 amAs much as i love particle illusion, the problem with using its gun fire is that if your gun isn’t pointing at an angle that matches the library, you’ve got to start doing all sorts of things.
For quick, easy gunfire i use vector paint on a black solid set to color dodge or similar transfer mode. Basically, on the frame of your shot, draw a jagged ‘explosion’ oover the gun barrel. Make sure the vector paint playback settings are set to ‘current frame’. Then move one frame forward, and draw a smaller, but still as jagged new flash. And that’s it.
When you play the sequence back you get a nice, quick, undistracting shot. How detailed you make the flash is up to you, but as it only last two frames it doesn’t really matter.
I came up with this way of doing it after watching a couple of movie sequences on freeze frame.

November 7, 2005 at 6:11 pmThis is known as “muzzle flash.”
DigiEffects Delerium plugin-suite for AE includes a “Muzzle Flash” plugin. https://www.digieffects.com
There’s other ways, too. Particle Illusion is great. Discreet combustion 2 and later has PI 2.x technology embedded into the program. The muzzle flashes are in there, too and no need to repurchase PI if you’ve already got combustion.
There’s books out there that cover this topic, too. Try “Adobe After Effects 6.5 Studio Techniques” by Mark Christiansen, as he dedicates a whole chapter on fire and explosions, of which muzzle flash is touched upon, and even shell-casings ejecting from the gun. (Hint: use a small mask and blur it.)
