Solid state memory is not as expensive as P2. P2 is expensive though, especially at the higher sizes. This will drop though….

FCP totally decompresses DV when you apply an effect. It doesn’t get any better than that, other than for the specific instances I iterate in my article on chroma sampling.

  • “File -> Export -> Quicktime Movie…” good – use default settings, make self contained. Best quality output

“File -> Export -> Quicktime Conversion…” – only use for making web movies or you’ll incur problems with repeated Y’CbCr -> RGB -> Y’CbCr and other nasties.

24f looks “ok” as long as you don’t botch the editing like Canon did for their demo video….. Main issue is total lack of compatibility.

    It’s lossy. It’s a hack for HDV.

For a real intermediate, I think you have a couple of choices – uncompressed or photoJPEG75% which is awesome and slightly (not visibly) lossy.

Picture is nice, ergonomics are not nice. Lens makes nice picture, but the servos are poor and laggy and feel like wet cabbage (as does the sony). Shoulder mounted, it tilts to the left – poor balance.

Main issues are can’t bring 30f or 24f into FCP, and can’t play them on any HDV deck, only the camera. So unless you shoot 60i, it’s pretty useless for FCP users.

Basically, it’s a hack to “fix” the poor FCP de-interlace, but you still loose rez. That’s why there’s 3rd party solutions. Also, there’s no free solution for 24p. Basically, you get what you pay for.

December 20, 2005 at 11:29 pm in reply to: Newbiwe question about proper timebase/compresion

    1) 29.97fps. Why? All NTSC is 29.97fps. your camera shoots 29.97fps always. It may be called 30p or 30f but that’s just short-hand for 29.97fps.

    1a) no.

    2) set the timeline to fields “none” and no, you don’t want field rendered output.

    3) DV is just fine, and the best option if mastering to DV. If you’re mastering to anything better, then uncompressed is the way to go for final render.

Try using uncompressed 8bit – that should avoid luma / gamma changes. You can select a portion of the HDV timeline, and file -> export -> quicktime movie…. and select uncompressed HD from the presets at that point, for generating your intermediaries.
