This is probably a dumb idea…
Posted by Jeffrey on December 20, 2005 at 5:10 pmDo you suppose that if you took regular 30i DV video in FCP and applied the stock de-interlace or flicker-filter to the clip you would get the same effect as if you shot it in 30p?
(I was exploring ideas like this because we now have a new XL-2 and a ton of old footage from an XL-1 that I would like to be able to give that Film Look you can get so much more eaisly from the XL-2.)
I was also experimenting with the gamma correction and other image control filters to get that film look from XL-1 ftg. Any recomendations on that subject?

December 20, 2005 at 5:25 pmIF your ‘film-look’ experimentaion with the XL1 footage doesn’t turn out the way you want you could try the Nattress Film Effects plugins for FCP. I think Graeme’s G Film Pack is still around 100 dollars USD and it’s exellent. It was made for the purpose you have in mind.

December 20, 2005 at 6:06 pmDe-interlacing 60i to get 30p works, and can work well, but the stock de-interlacer in FCP is poor. You should definately try my Film Effects as suggested. It does so much more than de-interlace though, and also does 24p for a more accurate film effect.

December 20, 2005 at 7:18 pmThanks Graeme,
Heard your interview on the COW podcast, very interesting and imformative stuff.
I downloaded the demo versions of your plug-ins but I don’t think I’m setting them right because my video just doesn’t look quite like the XL-2’s 24p. Any advice on the various settings for a good 24p or 30p look? (I know settings are very subjective so maybe you could just offer a good starting point other than the default settings the filters apply.)
Also, how does your product compare with Magic Bullet? I’m really hot on the tail of finding a good film-look and need all the info I can get. Thanks, It’s great to get good info straight from the source!

December 20, 2005 at 7:22 pmThe defaults are pretty much what works best most of the time – that’s why they’re the defaults. As for comparison with MB, I think they’re better, hence why I wrote them rather than paying out my own cash for MB.
For getting the look you want, I’ll need to see footage, and what settings you’re using, and a description of what you want and are not getting. It can be done, but it’s not easy on email. I’m really busy until the new year, but if you have time, I’ll be happy to work with you to get what you want, on phone and with an emailed or ftp’d copy of your footage. Try getting that level of customer support elsewhere….

December 21, 2005 at 3:17 amWay back in FCP 3 I saw a recipe for “Film Look” that used the de-interlaace, but it was a little more complicated. It went like this.
Duplicate your video so its on V1 and V2. Apply De-interlace to both tracks. Make sure the filter on V1 is set to “Odd” and the filter on V2 is set to “Even”. Then bring the transparancy on V2 down to 50%. Render and Voila! 30p Video.
Then for the film effects you export your creation using the quicktime conversion, and use the fake film look stuff there to add dust, scatches and some fat, clumsy film gammas.
Yeah there are a lot of plug-ins that will do a better job, but hey, this is free.

December 21, 2005 at 3:35 amBasically, it’s a hack to “fix” the poor FCP de-interlace, but you still loose rez. That’s why there’s 3rd party solutions. Also, there’s no free solution for 24p. Basically, you get what you pay for.
