  • Newbiwe question about proper timebase/compresion

I’ve looked into a few forums and help files/ books on FCP but haven’t found a satisfactory answer to my problems , although I know my questions relate to basic broadcast issues.

Ok this is my first foray into final cut editing and I’ve got a few simple questions that I’d like to set straight before i start editing.

I’m editing a feature length documentary shot in the 30p “fame” mode on the Canon XL-1s mini-dv…which will occasionaly be intercut with 29.97 interlaced stock footage news programs.

    I’m using final cut pro 5 on a G5

and the final output is for ntsc canadian television

    my questions are:

    1. because I shot ,my video in 30p frame mode should I be working in a 30 frame time base or 29.97 and if so, why?

1a. will I have to “treat” the stock footage in any way? re-render it to conform to my 30p footage? will there be any sound synching issues?

    2. when trasferring to other programs like after effects should I be exporting the footage from final cut with fields or not and should the final output be rendered with interlaced fields or not ?

3 my final question is what codec will render the highest quality image for broadcast? is the apple (dv ntsc) codec broadcast quality…is there anything to be gained by exporting at a higher codec like (uncompressed 8-bit)?

I find that people tell me what format/timebase/codec I should work in often can’t tell me why, it’s just the way they’ve done it before, etc…I quess I want to know why these choices are made.

I appreciate your time and I’d like to thank anyone who might have any suggestions

    1) 29.97fps. Why? All NTSC is 29.97fps. your camera shoots 29.97fps always. It may be called 30p or 30f but that’s just short-hand for 29.97fps.

    1a) no.

    2) set the timeline to fields “none” and no, you don’t want field rendered output.

    3) DV is just fine, and the best option if mastering to DV. If you’re mastering to anything better, then uncompressed is the way to go for final render.
