January 30, 2014 at 5:39 pm in reply to: MAC OSX Update to 10.6.8 causing AVID 5.5.3 to crash on start upI did try the AVID uninstall/reinstall step, which produced the same results. However, I did finally get it to work by doing the following…
1. Target boot the HD onto another Mac.
2. Start up that other Mac with the target drive from the original (problem) Mac as the startup disc.
3. Reinstall Snow Leopard to the original Mac via this setup. After I did that, Avid came back up perfectly. I know the version matrix says 10.6.8 and 5.5.3 are compatible, but I found that updating from 10.6.6. to 10.6.8 caused Avid to stop working. The fix was ugly, but I guess it worked!

November 1, 2011 at 7:01 pm in reply to: AVID Unity Media Offline issue after trashing databasesUPDATE ON THIS!
I talked to my Unity tech about this, and he suggested some things:#1 anything in folders called “1” should be moved into folders called “system1”. Once this has been done, use system1 to delete the database files, and let system1 rebuild them in the AVID. Likewise, for system2, repeat this process on that machine.
#2 all media files (MXF or OMFI) on the system drive should be moved to a Unity drive and then deleted from the system drive.
#3 I found out that AVID builds its own additional folders on the Unity once the existing folders are too full. So thus the “system1” and then “system1.1” etc etc.
Thanks to anyone who is reading this and had begun digging in.

So this is interesting, and somewhat related to this thread. I’m working on a short project where the producers have hired a Phantom operator to shoot some 1000fps material. The footage looks great, except for one problem. There’s an issue with anything reflecting alot of light in that it doesn’t just reflect it, it colors it with pinks and teals.Normally I’d expect these objects to bounce back white/ blown out detail. I spoke to the operator, and he suggested using a gaussian blur of 1 or 2. He also suggested desaturating the image. I’ve tried these things, and it didn’t help too much.
Any ideas? Thanks!

3 years later, I have the exact same problem. Did you solve this? Thanks!

It was almost a year ago, so to be honest, I’m not sure exactly what I did to remedy that one. I’m not too familiar with the matrox box either.
We did finish our movie, so it did eventually work out…
Did you try cutting your problem sequence into a new sequence?

November 30, 2010 at 7:26 pm in reply to: Having a text card come up at the beginning of a DVD same way the FCC warning doesThat’s easy.
Just play the FCC warning (which is technically a 10 second video clip with fades) as the first play of the disc. Then program the end jump of that to your main menu. -

November 30, 2010 at 7:13 pm in reply to: Problem Playing back video footage from Cannon AVCHD cameraI’m going to guess its a RAM issue. Unfortunately this is not an easy or cheap upgrade for a MACBOOK PRO.
It could also be a drive speed issue. Are you playing the footage off of an internal drive on the laptop? Or is your media on an external hard drive? If external, how is it connected to your laptop?
One other question. Will it play in Quicktime smoothly?

November 30, 2010 at 7:09 pm in reply to: Having a text card come up at the beginning of a DVD same way the FCC warning doesThe easiest way to do this is to add it to the head of your sequence in FCP before exporting.
HOWEVER…. if you’ve already exported your movie, you can create another little sequence and program the DVD to play this first before your feature begins.
Step 1. Make your FCC warning video in FCP, and export it.
Step 2. Program this as your first play in DVDSP.
Step 3. Program the end jump of your first play as the feature.
You can play around with this too. For example, you might want the first play to be a main menu, and then when you select “your movie” on the menu, it actually goes to the warning, which then automatically goes to the feature. The key is to play around with the “first play” and “end jump” settings in DVDSP.
Hope this helps.
