  • Opening and closing compressor stops the beach ball

    Posted by George Mandl on November 30, 2010 at 5:42 pm

    I found a weird fix that seems to stop the beach ball of doom from spinning on me in FCP 7.0.2. Often times, when I’m rendering something, I’ll pop over to Firefox and check email. And often times when I return to FCP, there is no response but the beach ball. Somehow, when in this situation, if I open Compressor, and then quit Compressor, FCP comes back to life.

    Has anyone seen this before? And if so, do you know why this beach balling happens when you leave FCP and come back, and why the Compressor trick works?

    Pleasantly confused….

    How much RAM do you have installed? Sounds like not enough…

    8GB should theoretically be enough to work with ProRes, right?

    One other detail…. XSAN.

    The big question I’m trying to find an answer for is not why this is happening in the first place, but what the relationship is to Compressor (AKA why does opening and closing Compressor resolve this?)

    It sounded like a RAM issue to me, but with 8Gb that should not be happening. But, since it is, try trashing preferences.

    Preferences have been trashed, caches emptied. This is an ongoing thing that hasn’t been solved by the normal FCP problem solving approaches.
    I suspect this is to do with the way this facility has their SAN set up, and how FCP relates to that. There are other quirky issues here, and these issues seem to be shared on all the systems.

    By the way, I just cyber-stalked you. I’m a Boston-> LA transplant too 🙂
