Having a text card come up at the beginning of a DVD same way the FCC warning does
Posted by Chris Guevarra on November 30, 2010 at 6:59 pmHi all,
I’m fairly new to the DVD Studio Pro game and I am trying to figure out how to have a text card fade in and out before our DVD main menu pops up. It would come up the exact same way the FCC copyright warning comes up whenever you first insert your DVD.
Our indie film company would just like the audience to first see some text saying that this DVD is a rough cut and that all music and text are temporary before they see anything else on the DVD.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
-Chris
(I posted this in the DVD Studio Pro forum but I figured one of you fine folks here would probably know as well)
Thanks,

November 30, 2010 at 7:09 pmThe easiest way to do this is to add it to the head of your sequence in FCP before exporting.
HOWEVER…. if you’ve already exported your movie, you can create another little sequence and program the DVD to play this first before your feature begins.
Step 1. Make your FCC warning video in FCP, and export it.
Step 2. Program this as your first play in DVDSP.
Step 3. Program the end jump of your first play as the feature.
You can play around with this too. For example, you might want the first play to be a main menu, and then when you select “your movie” on the menu, it actually goes to the warning, which then automatically goes to the feature. The key is to play around with the “first play” and “end jump” settings in DVDSP.
Hope this helps.

November 30, 2010 at 7:23 pmThanks for the quick response, George! I really appreciate it.
I think I may have confused you however. To clarify, what I would like to do is have the “FCC Warning” play before the actual DVD menu comes up (instead of it coming up right before the FCP sequence and after you press “Play movie”).
Once you insert the DVD into the player, the very first thing that should pop up is the “FCC Warning” and then the main menu should come up with the “Play Movie” button in it.
Sorry about the confusion 🙂

November 30, 2010 at 7:26 pmThat’s easy.
Just play the FCC warning (which is technically a 10 second video clip with fades) as the first play of the disc. Then program the end jump of that to your main menu. -

November 30, 2010 at 7:36 pmWhat ever asset is marked as ‘fist play’ is the first thing the DVD will do, hence the term first play. The first play can be a menu, or other asset like a moving clip.
Export your title card as a separate element. Then you can bring that asset into DVDSP and make it the first play. Then make your end jump be whatever you want to go to next.If you attach your warning title card to the beginning of your piece, instead of making it a separate asset it will play every time the actual piece is played. Not very elegant, and annoying. If the warning is a separate asset, you can make it so that it only plays once when the disc is first is inserted, but not on subsequent replays of the disc on that particular insertion.

November 30, 2010 at 10:58 pmOh, and of course you have to disable all of the remote buttons while it is playing for more of the “Anti-piracy” warning look and feel. 😉 Oh, and your warning should be at least three minutes long, so they really, really, really know and understand that this DVD is a rough cut. 😎
Track Inspector>User Operations:>Disable All.

You could also put some previews of your coming video projects before the main menu too, and make them unskippable too! 🙂 -

December 2, 2010 at 4:41 amAnd after the warning, don’t forget to add 5-10 previews for old movies that the user can’t skip through. Gives you that true hollywood dvd feel as well.

December 2, 2010 at 8:10 amLOL! Or maybe I’ll just make an “FCC warning” that at first feels like a 2-minute trailer to a crime suspense movie and tells the audience that if they ever bootleg this DVD that the Interpol is going to burst through their windows and arrest them and hunt down their family. Oh wait…
Thanks,
