Since you cannot add an other FW port to the machine and the 1200 deck will take the entire bandwidth for the HD stream – this is a really bad idea. You will not have enough horsepower to handle what you are trying to do.
The iMac is not a machine for HD work.

the default in FCP 5 is 1 track of video and 4 tracks of audio.

Because of core audio
if you set your computer’s out audio to your Kona board, the keyboard commands to increase and decrease volume should work.But then, there is always the Audio mixer in FCP also.

Well Kevin there is not upgrade path for the hardware. Since PCIe and PCIx are not compatible, and the future is PCIe at some point yes the older customers that want to hang on to older systems will be able to do just that, and maybe pick up a few good items on ebay.
As technology moves forward we must also, or you can buy into one of the proprietary systems and go thru this on a regular basis. The current Kona line is fully compatible with your current G5’s and will be as long as you keep them operational. Will they be able to get the most out of a future release of FCP – Not when it goes to intel.
The Roadmap for hardware is set by Apple, not AJA. But I think we can all bne assured that PCIx boards will be available for at the least a couple of years. But I would not expect any manufacturer of Professional Video products to stay behind and survive in this market place.so the short answer is that you are most likely safe until Apple releases the Intel version of the Pro Apps.

It’s the same as long as the user understands that Shake does not playout video with rendering the QT Flipbook preview first. It is the nature of a frame based rendering system like Shake uses.

I cannot agree more, the throngs of people on these boards wanting to throw out the old and bring in the new, forget that most pro systems DO NOT need to be constantly updated. I suspect that AJA and other companies have been inundated with return requests for equipment that cannot ever run in the the Dual Core machines ( and may damage both if installed in the incorrect machine).
PCI-X was backwards compatible with earlier PCI bus cards,
PCI-E is not backwards compatible and needs to be treated as a whole new ballgame.
You will not be able to move the older cards to the new machines.Thanks.

Dropped frames are almost universally a result of your storage not being fast enough for your video to play back.
Other causes can include, multiple devices on the FW chain, mounted but unused optical disks or hard drives on your system, and other applications robbing system resources.Gary Adcock

I’ve heard it’s like working with MPEG2 (well, I guess it is MPEG2 sort of) in that it’s not frame accurate and requires re-encoding when finished. You have to deal with the GOP structure and it limits you.”NO, not as the HDV codec in FCP, and The HDV codec is a variation of Mpeg 2,
the sony HDV format only allows for I frames at the GOP marker or at every 15 frames. So any edit or effect not on a “true” iframe, needs to be re-interpreted by the software so that you can lay it back to tape.Search the threads on this or the HDV forum for more answers.
