And I spent whole night eating my guts as I bought Kona LH a week ago.
Maybe Aja sales people should take some more consideration about their customers. My first thought when I saw “Come tommorrow” is that they are lounching some new product (and lowering prices of old ones) like Kona 3 and that I just lost a nice ammount of money.
Never mind. All is fine and nothing is lost. But also nothing is new.
    Regards,
    J.

    Hi-

AJA has a 30-day return policy, so if you are unhappy, we will take it back. 🙂

That being said, please note that you will need to upgrade your G5 and many other components of your system if you wish to upgrade to PCIe and KONA LHe. Your KONA LH operates as advertised, as I’m sure your entire current system does…I know it’s frustrating when new computers, storage, cards, arrive seemily every month!

Again, if you are unhappy, please let us know, as that is not our wish.

    Thank you,

[AJA Sales Department] “I know it’s frustrating when new computers, storage, cards, arrive seemily every month!”

I cannot agree more, the throngs of people on these boards wanting to throw out the old and bring in the new, forget that most pro systems DO NOT need to be constantly updated. I suspect that AJA and other companies have been inundated with return requests for equipment that cannot ever run in the the Dual Core machines ( and may damage both if installed in the incorrect machine).

PCI-X was backwards compatible with earlier PCI bus cards,
PCI-E is not backwards compatible and needs to be treated as a whole new ballgame.
You will not be able to move the older cards to the new machines.

    Thanks.

[Steve Connor] “What’s the retail price of this card?”

Same as the existing Kona LH card $1790.

    From AJA
The KONA LHe is a 4-lane PCIe board to support the new Apple hardware, and is specifically designed for the PowerMac line that has just been announced. These new boards are shipping worldwide October 31 (under two weeks!), and have the same list price as the current KONA LH, $1790 US.

So what are we to expect when AJA decides to update or deliver a new product in the future? Will the old PCI-X customers be left wanting, and only the PCI express customers will get the new goodies? I don’t plan on updating my existing G5 infrustructure anytime soon, but I do want options for SD/HD cards in the future. What’s the product roadmap look like?

Well Kevin there is not upgrade path for the hardware. Since PCIe and PCIx are not compatible, and the future is PCIe at some point yes the older customers that want to hang on to older systems will be able to do just that, and maybe pick up a few good items on ebay.
As technology moves forward we must also, or you can buy into one of the proprietary systems and go thru this on a regular basis. The current Kona line is fully compatible with your current G5’s and will be as long as you keep them operational. Will they be able to get the most out of a future release of FCP – Not when it goes to intel.
The Roadmap for hardware is set by Apple, not AJA. But I think we can all bne assured that PCIx boards will be available for at the least a couple of years. But I would not expect any manufacturer of Professional Video products to stay behind and survive in this market place.

so the short answer is that you are most likely safe until Apple releases the Intel version of the Pro Apps.
then you will have to get new machines to keep up.
