    Hi Ben,

Have you tried turning on looping of the section of the timeline you want to playback using Ctrl+shift+L?

Another vote for MXF. It is the only way that I know of to send files back and forth between Vegas and FC.

  • Krishan,

Don’t forget about Sony MXF. I use MXF files for bringing video files into Final Cut Pro and from there, output to tape. The originals in my case were XDCAM HD that I down convert to the 720×486 (I’m NTSC) IMX 50mb setting. There is an IMX PAL preset for rendering in Vegas as well. The file size will be much smaller with MXF than with the Quicktime uncompressed and you shouldn’t have any quality problems. I haven’t had any complaints from NBC, CNN, FOX or MSNBC so you should be good to go.

Let me know if you need to know more but keep in mind I am 8 hours ahead of US time so it is about midnight where I am right now.

“How would you deal with cutting around 40 news elements a day? Would I have to open or nest a project for each instance I want a new timeline?”

Yes, each edited version is a separate .veg file. Just import the .veg file and you will have the edited content ready on your timeline. (This assumes that you are all working from a shared server.)

“Is there anyway to quickly scrub the timeline without adding a new in point and selecting a new region?”

Yes, just use the J,K,L buttons to rewind or fast forward through the timeline without affecting in-out points.

“I discovered how to turn off grouping, but can I seperate audio channels 1 and 2 and patch route them to different tracks on the timeline?”

Right click on any audio track and you have a number of options on how to select the audio channel you want.

“Last but not least, I can’t find the option to scrub audio frame by frame within the trimmer window.”

Vegas does not excel in this area. I relied on the type of editing you are describing for years but gave it up in Vegas. I learned to rely on the waveform and trimming to get what I want. There are ways to come close to what you want though. For example if you hold down the control button in Vegas while scrubbing the playhead in the trimmer you will hear audio. Still, it doesn’t work that well. You can also get a Contour Shuttle Pro (which I have and do recommend) that comes much closer to approximating what you want with the shuttle knob but still I rely on the waveforms mainly.

“Erik, their recent seminar “The New Economics of HD” had no problems at all so I’m not sure why there’s a problem today.”

I’d say there is a huge difference between the two offerings. Today’s session is right to the heart of what every user wants…simply to get better at using Vegas. Maybe even learn a new trick.

Mike, I don’t think there are too many of us trying to access the site. I think the problem lies with those who are putting on the webinar. Very unprofessional. Super buzzkill.

Looks like Sony’s site is crashed. Right?

Couple of ideas come to mind. Right click on the clip in the timeline for example and go to properties. On one of the tabs inside you will see the option to enter the speed control numerically.

Also, using 4 point editing, you could put your talent camera clip on the timeline and then in the trimmer mark the precise in-out point for the audio track. Using 4 points will give you a fit to fill edit that should be very precise.

I would recommend the IMX50mb 720×486 MXF. I use this with a FCP user but I think he had to purchase a MXF add-on of some type for full integration with FCP. Be forewarned, Vegas and FCP in general do not speak to each other.
