One the projects I’m working on is a music video where I want the performer to be lip-syncing to a track that is sped-up by a precise percentage. In Vegas I’m hoping to produce a slow motion effect by extending the clip by the exact same percentage that the music track was slowed down so the two are in sync.

The problem is, I haven’t been able to figure out how to make a clip be slow-motion other than by Ctrl + dragging the end of the clip and stretching it. This seems too haphazard when trying to precisely sync to a music track.

Are there alternative methods of slowing down clips in Vegas that involve precise percentages or fractions? Please offer suggestions if you have some. Thanks very much!

Couple of ideas come to mind. Right click on the clip in the timeline for example and go to properties. On one of the tabs inside you will see the option to enter the speed control numerically.

Also, using 4 point editing, you could put your talent camera clip on the timeline and then in the trimmer mark the precise in-out point for the audio track. Using 4 points will give you a fit to fill edit that should be very precise.

    Thanks Erik!

Playback rate seems very logical but what I’m noticing is that it doesn’t change the actual length of the clip. It plays slower, but the playback is truncated once it reaches the original end of the clip.

I tried this with a playback number greater than 1 (say 5) and not only did the clip remain the same length, it just repeated the sequence 5 times within the clip length.

But I like your Trimmer idea. I think that could work. But doesn’t this seem like a major Vegas weakness? My understanding is other NLEs allow you to enter in a numerical percent and the length of the clip expands/contracts to match.

Just drag the end of the event to match the new length. There will be a divot on the top of the clip where is starts to repeat. This is by design. If you have an edit and you just want to speed up or slow down the clip, you probably don’t want the length of the edit to change and overlay other clips on the timeline.

Thanks very much, John. Indeed, that is the solution. Splendid.

Hold ctrl key while you drag the clip will change the rate but not the number of frames.

    Cheers
