Maybe this is obvious but just in case I thought I should let you know that it is possible to use third-party software to create 32bit avi’s or qt’s to put on the timeline in Vegas and get closed captioning that way.

Chris, glad to help. Once you get Vegas “tricked out” with all the shortcuts and settings, you have a pretty high performance editor. Agree 100% about learning all the time but if you really want to learn, teach it to someone else like I’ve been doing over the past few weeks and you’ll learn twice as much!

1. Best way to display source time code on timeline (I want to see
the in and out points for the clips I’m using)You can see the in/out timecode on the thumbnails on the timeline.
Options>Preferences>Video
Show source frame numbers on event thumbnails as (select Timecode)4. Shortcut to matchframe from timeline (load source footage of
timeline event with in/out selected in trimmer). I can’t actually
find any way to do this, keyboard shortcut or not.Simple, map the TrackView.Event.OpeninTrimmer to any key you like on the keyboard. I chose the Esc key as that works perfectly for me. Want to matchframe? With the timeline in focus anywhere you leave the cursor you can matchframe the clip to the trimmer by hitting (in my case) the Esc key. If you select a region on the timeline and hit the Esc key it will matchframe the in and out point in the trimmer. Works perfectly.
5. Shortcut to clear / unmark In and Out points.
There is no way that I know of to clear in/out points but if they are not selected (highlighted) they are not in effect so it is as if they have been cleared. If you must remove them, you can always drag the yellow out point until it meets up with the yellow in point and you will now only have a single mark.

Actually not so. All you have to do is turn ripple on. You only have to split if you need to cut a clip. Otherwise grab ANY EVENT (mouse drag) with ripple turned on and every event equal to or behind that event will move down the timeline. Very easy and I use it all the time.

Hello, I’ve run into the same problem and I was wondering if you ever found a solution possibly???? please???? :))

John,
You provide your system specs which is a huge help for a lot of people including myself. I haven’t found yet where Sony gives any recommendations the perfect “box” so it is hard to know what to build beyond the “minimum requirements”.
My question for you though is do you plan on building a new box for Vegas9 or will the specs you list on your web page continue to work just fine for you?

Tim,
Nice of you to offer your sleuthing services and good that we came up with same results. I use a PVW-2800 which does have a built-in TBC which I assumes provides it’s own setup and blanking so that is an interesting point you brought up. My scope was intentionally setup to see what was going into the VTR and not what was coming out. That should be an interesting test. Bigger problem through right now is that my HP workstation needs slot 4 for the XENA and I have put my Matrox AXIO LE back in the that slot after I had some problems with XENA card. I think I want to get a box just for the XENA card, Sony Vegas and CS3 and nothing else just to have in case I come up with a good need for it. Thanks again for helping confirm what I thought was the problem.

Mike, aren’t SMPTE bars always at 0 ire though? This is what I have experienced.

Tim,
You are right. It doesn’t seem right but I’m pretty sure that is the way it is. I didn’t understand what you meant by retail drivers. I am using the latest drivers from AJA for the XENA LHE. Machina had some settings but nothing that changed the output on the video card. Rudy at AJA told me that it was how Sony wrote the drivers for the XENA that they didn’t deal with 7.5 IRE only 0 IRE.

Hi Tim,
The black level was below 0 ire. I have since found out what the issue is pretty much. Sony Vegas output through the AJA Xena board is default SMPTE 0 ire which works great for Japan NTSC for example. This is not specifically a problem with Xena but with how Sony wrote the drivers to work with the Xena. They wrote the drivers for 0 ire. Now the AJA Kona board (Final Cut world) software has a tick box for switching the output to 7.5 but for some reason know one thought to do this for AJA Xena users. The solution seems to be a SDI to Component Analog converter from AJA that does include a switch to 7.5 IRE.
