    Bill,

I’m not in TV news (at least anymore as I was over 20 years ago) but I’ve been using Vegas with the XDCAM workflow now for about 9 months. The question I have for you is how do you plan to take the final edited piece to air? Of course, when I was in TV News we had to edit to a tape master and run it down to the control room and roll-in the video live. Do you plan to output to some tape format or are you able to play back computer format files? I would guess that this would be the trickiest part of the process but the workflow inside Vegas itself is a joy to work with and very fast.

If you are only shooting thirty minutes of video then you could actually import full res and probably work that way if you like. But the proxy/conform workflow is very nice for long form which is the kind of work that I do. The conform is flawless which is still a little surprising.

    Kevin,

Could you briefly state what your work flow is for Broadcast? What do you acquire on and what do you deliver on using Vegas? Also what hardware if any is needed for final output? I have been trying to find others who do broadcast but it hasn’t been easy.

February 25, 2009 at 10:27 am in reply to: Closed Captioning Software?

    Charles,

CCaption has a software only solution that creates 32bit mov files with captioning encoded. After enabling the alpha channel you can import them into Vegas and render the captioning movs right in with the rest of your timeline. The way the text gets into the mov files is by properly formatting a Word txt file according to the CCaption instructions. There are commands for time code entry, pause, end etc.

I bought the software about 8 years ago when it was about 1/6 of the cost that it is today. https://www.cpcweb.com/

This is still the cheapest in-house solution I know of.

Is this the Larry Sherwood from the old Discreet Edit days? If so, are you giving Vegas a try these days? The question about how to go to in-out point I will try to address first. In Vegas, I don’t think so, because you really don’t use in-out points on the timeline. You use the snap-to loop regions. Wherever your cursor is on the timeline is an automatic in point of sorts and then as you hold down the left mouse button and drag you are creating your outpoint. So if you want to mark an outpoint first just put the cursor where you want the outpoint and then drag left to create your in point. I hope that gets you started on that question.

Also, if you need to get to a specific point on the timeline and the loop region isn’t helping you then I suggest hitting the M button where you want to mark and Vegas will put a marker there that can be gone to immediately by hitting the the numerical key on your keyboard that corresponds to the marker number. i.e To go to Marker 1 hit the number 1 button.

As to next or previous event commands in Vegas the answer is yes. I have my Q&W keys remapped for previous and next event now so I had to look it up in the manual to see what the original keystroke commands were. In Vegas they are called left by edit and right by edit. The default commands are ctl-alt-left arrow and ctl-alt-right arrow. Now you can see why I changed them to single key strokes.

Let me know if any of this helps or hurts. I don’t frequent this particular forum too much so I just now saw your post. Take care.

    Eric,

Thanks for the info. Just to clarify, you are saying that you can import DVCPRO clips from a FCP export into your system? I realize you say that you must render but when I try to import dvcpro, PPRO gives me the “generic error”. I understand that you said that DVCPRO50 and DVCPROHD won’t work but just plain DVCPRO should work?

    Steve,

That is what I was looking for. Thanks very much. I noticed that earlier and I thought it was just for use when one was swapping out multiple takes on the timline. Again thanks a lot.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I found a pretty good solution that is very similar to what steve suggested. I found that if you go Display Properties>Appearance>Advanced>Item>3D Objects you can set the color scheme for the Sony Vegas BG color and the text on top of it by adjusting the “window” setting. Works pretty good give it a try as it doesn’t affect the view of windows explorer and other apps.

    Hey Steve,
Interesting approach using the windows theme. I did some playing around and did improve my situation thanks to your suggestion. However, I do find the “global” application of the darker color scheme not satisfying. Especially in windows explorer it seems to bug me. Thanks for the idea though and hopefully someone will have a registry hack for Sony Vegas.

    Bryce,

Just wanted to let you know that I have tried 720×480 project sizes as well without any change. Are you able to successfully import aaf files from Vegas into PPro?

June 24, 2008 at 2:28 pm in reply to: SD Video into HD Project

    Tim,

I agree with all you said except I believe there is a strong need to have a “center cut” option for output. For those like myself who are archiving hundreds of hours of HD footage now in preparation for HD only production in the future, we need the option to simply downconvert our HD video for standard 4×3 SD without letterbox and without rendering.

For my program needs, letterboxing or stretching the video is not an option. Not just my needs I believe either as 99% of all SD programming is fullscreen 4×3.

Appreciate your thoughts and taking time to help out

    Erik
