  • Keyboard-trimming – cant quite work it out

Posted by Ben Edwards on April 21, 2010 at 10:16 am

My goodeling and reading help manuals has led me to the fact that although there is not a FCP/Avid style trim tool in Vegas keyboard trimming is the answer (and possibly better). Thing is I don’t seem to be able to quite master it. My understanding is it is quick and slick but my experience is it is fiddely and klunky.

So this is what I am doing, any help on what I am doing wrong would be much appreciated.

    1) select the edit/clip I want to trim with [ and ]
    2) use 1 and 3 to remove/add a frame.

So far so good, I guess I need to turn on auto ripple to use this, OK. The problem I have is previewing the edit. What I want to do is add remove frames and then press a key to preview the edit (or have a look continually playing) and then add/remove frames. Basicaly using 3 keys and no mouse. What I end up doing to prevew edit is.

    3) Moving the cursor a little before the edit and pressing space to see the edit
    4) I then have to use [ and ] again as I now don’t have the edit selected

At this point I give up as it is so fiddly and go back to using split and drag to do the edit.

Can someone please help as I am enjoying using Vegas (in most part) and don’t want to have to but a Mac;).

    Regards,
    Ben

    Hi Ben,

Have you tried turning on looping of the section of the timeline you want to playback using Ctrl+shift+L?

For some reason I am unable to get the 1-3 numeric keys to do what the shortcut document suggests they should do. But my technique to do what you are trying is to use the 4-6 keys to move by frame to my desired point, then [ or ] to set a new trim point. As the other poster suggested, I have looping enabled and press the space bar to preview.

Are you sure this in not a numlock issue?

Yep, I tried it with and without numlock on two different computers, one with Vegas 9c and the other with 9d. In either case, 1 and 3 do not move me one frame in the trimmer. It is probably a user error. Here is what I did:

    1. Load clip in trimmer and ensure numlock is off.
    2. Make a selection with looping on.
    3. On numeric keypad, press 7 to position at in point of selection.
    4. Press 1 on numeric keypad to move the in point one frame, but cursor moves to out point.
    5. Press 3 on numeric keypad to move the out point one frame, but cursor moves 14 frames to the right.

See anything wrong with my technique.

Ben, if you’re still seeing this thread I got a good response back from Kevin at SCS. Here’s the way to do what you wanted:

    1. Load clip into trimmer.
    2. Make selection and set looping on.
    3. Press Home or End to go to beginning or end of selection.
    4. Press Shift-Left Arrow or Shift Right Arrow to move the in or out point of the selection one frame left or right.
    5. Press Space Bar to preview the selection.
    6. Repeat 3-5 as necessary.

This will be very useful for me.
