I use Avid MC every day and teach FCP at a local college part-time.
This fall I get to teach FCPX and so far its been a blast learning and working with it.
Did it convert me? Yes it got me thinking that Avid and Adobe better start stealing and moving forward with their tools cause it does feel old and stale when I go back to Avid.
I purchased FCPX an hour it was released because I believe in what I can do in it.
From where Im from, my deliverables are all file based anyway.
We have a few BetaSP decks and even an XDCAM/DVCAM (decks and cameras) collecting dust at work along with the Sony SVHS.
Ever since RED/DSRL came in, I’ve yet to touch anything tape based (its been almost a year).
Maybe were not pro enough but I sure feel like one when I can fire off projects super fast in FCPX and without the drama of Avid MC 🙂 -
I had the Quadro 4000 a little early (vendor told me that Nvidia had driver problems) so I was SOL for a few weeks. Even after a fix it was good for awhile then OS X updated and killed the working drivers.
Sorry its been so long since but you have to find the right drivers that matches the OS. -
Ive been playing this game with Apple for years and its always the same.
Budget starts in April.
Wait for August then if nothing happens, buy buy buy!

I thought the Lite can only deal with files 1080 and lower?
Have you converted your R3D into ProRes 1080 then tried it with Resolve?
Again Im not sure you can open R3D 4k or higher in Lite. -
Using the ATTO R380 currently with G-Tech 8TB RAID.
For now its a Resolve/R3D set-up.
Waiting for a CUBIX to implement into our Avid MC Nitris DX system.
So far Im getting 300 + in speed test so Im sure this will suffice for Avid. -

I would need someone else to chime in on the MXF part.
Ive only been going from R3D > Avid AMA > Avid basic edit > Export AAF.
Im sure there is a workflow where you set all your R3D>AMA clips into a Sequence then Transcode for ease of edit but I havent gone that route to date. -
If you use the same R3D and ingest into Avid with AMA leaving all folders structures intact (original R3D folders) then all you need to do is export as AAF and make sure to check on “AAF Edit Protocol”.
Now load that AAF doc in Resolve and select the original source clips.
Just in case, make sure to have all tracks hi-lighted in Avid before exporting to AAF.
We use Avid MC Nitris DX on Mac here.
We make copies of the R3D files and so far no problems reading from different copies.
