hi jeremy-
thank you for the quick reply.
as of now, i haven’t purchased a card (or monitor). it’s what i’m trying to make a budget for without cleaning out the (entire) savings account. so i figured i’d check with the cow….
the card i have is an NVIDIA 6800. i have a 30″ apple cinema display (my wife bought it for me and like her, it’s sweet!) so i don’t use the second DVI out. is this a possibility or am i once again on Fantasy Island?
thanks again for the help,
e3

ohhh, the humanity…
the PVM 14″ is about $1500 then the HD card is another $1500. so that’s like $3k… is there something i’m missing on the 2-PVM’s for less than 4k? is there an HD downconvert setting that is usable for CC?
i will be posting a doc in DVCProHD (my first HD project), and need a monitor for HD… but there’s a good chance i will be going out of house for a final transfer/color correction. if $ were no object, it wouldn’t be an issue, but for now that’s not the case.
so, is there a decent (relatively) inexpensive HD monitor out there? a computer monitor?
as always thank you for the help…

that popsicle stick RAID is awesome!!!
i have a granite digital dual hot-swap SATA RAID setup now. with the Sonnet Tempo-X 8. sounds like the Seagates or Hitachi drives are the way to go. can you recommend a website or retailer?
thank you,

D’oh!!!
DVCProHD will be the primary format for this project. 10-bit could sneak in, but i’ll probably bring that in DVCProHD.
Seagate?
Maxtor?
Hitachi?
WD?thanks for the help!

thank you for the info. i didn’t know lectro made a 250mw. that should help on the distance for sure… i’ll look into it. i’m going to rent a wireless kit and see how it goes prior to making a purchase.
i’ll also try a helmet rig-up too.
again thank you and glory to the cow!

it sounds like a flir system. generally they have a 720×480 output, tho’ i know they’re working with eurocopter on an HD version. last i heard they tested it on an implosion outside portland, OR-USA. either way the flir systems are one-piece units, i.e. cameras are not interchangable.
for what it’s worth, since DV/SD is the best your gonna get, stay digibeta and use tape to crop your viewfinder for 16×9. at least you’ll stay away from a long GOP in editing.
good luck.

QT 7.1 no longer has mpeg2 as an export/conversion option… could this be related to walter’s problem or am i totally off base?
QT 7.0.4 is great for simple DVD burns when compressor isn’t necessary… i’m bummed they took out the mpeg2 option. sorry for the digression.
ce’ la’ vie,

thank you for the info. it is very much appreciated. i’ll see how the rycote windscreens work. i tried a sony UWP, but the range didn’t hold up that well. i may rent a lectrosonics and see how it goes with one of those prior to a purchase.
again, thank you and when i shoot next i’ll do a post and let you know how it goes!

simon, thank you for getting back to me…
finally a mystery that’s worked in my favor! suddenly, no cable changes or anything… as i was about to tear open the drive enclosure, the unseen drive appeared!?
for the record, i did all of what you had suggested prior to posting and even had granite digital send me another enclosure. there was a bad tray in the original enclosure, (they “cross-shipped” a new enclosure… good company!) but the new one too? not very likely.
the good thing is, the G5 sees everything now and i’ve set-up my RAID and life seems to be good!
thank you for the reply and the suggestions!
