  • and an HD monitor and the PVM 14″…

Posted by E. Eric johnson iii on June 22, 2006 at 9:08 pm

    ohhh, the humanity…

i read earlier that it’s possible to get 2 PVMs for less than 4k… from what i found, one PVM 14″ is about $1500 then the HD card is another $1500. so that’s $3k… is there something i’m missing on the 2-PVM’s for less than 4k? is there an HD downconvert setting that is usable for CC?

i will be posting a doc in DVCProHD (my first HD project), and need a monitor for HD… but there’s a good chance i will be going out of house for a final transfer/color correction. if $ were no object, it wouldn’t be an issue, but for now that’s not the case.

so i guess the question is: is there a decent (relatively) inexpensive HD monitor out there? maybe a computer monitor with DVI or HDMI? — until i can afford a PVM?

as always thank you for the help…

If your HD card has analog component out, then you don’t need the HD SDI card in this monitor. What card do you have?

If your HD card has HD-SDI out only, then you will need a converter such as the HD10C2 from AJA which is significantly less expensive than the Sony.

    hi jeremy-

thank you for the quick reply.

as of now, i haven’t purchased a card (or monitor). it’s what i’m trying to make a budget for without cleaning out the (entire) savings account. so i figured i’d check with the cow….

the card i have is an NVIDIA 6800. i have a 30″ apple cinema display (my wife bought it for me and like her, it’s sweet!) so i don’t use the second DVI out. is this a possibility or am i once again on Fantasy Island?

    thanks again for the help,

If you have a PCI-X G5 you can get yourself a Kona 2(PCI-X) card (which I highly recommend) and the PVM for $3500 give or take. You will not need a converter with the Kona series cards.

If you have a PCI-e machine (dual or quad core) you can get the kona 3 and PVM for $4350 or so. you will not be disappointed with this setup. Do you have storage?

Actually, if you don’t need upconvert functionality, you can get a Kona LH or LHe and a PVM for 3-grandish. the LH series will also allow you to bring in analog component as well as digital SDI. the Kona 2/3 is digital inputs only.

the LH seems like a good way to go. and i think the PVM seems inevitable.

thank you very much for your help.

As far as the DVI output is concern, the only way I know to get an HD signal out of it is the MXO from Matrox at 1000$, but its not on the market yet.

You just need a Component HD card like the Kona LH, Kona 2, Kona 3. We don’t run the HD-SDI option on the PVM’s here as it’s just a waste of money, as you’ve found out. Run your HD via Component.

You should check out the panasonic BT-LH1700W monitor, B&H photo lists it for $2800.00. It take HD SDI or Component in, so you’l need either an AJA or Blackmagic Decklink card.

Also you can pick up a Blackmagic HD-Link for about $700 and use it with a 23″ inch apple cinema display and the dvi out from the G5. That’s the way I went when I set up my system 18 months ago.

thank you for the info herb-

i’m very curious, have you had good luck with the panasonic 1700? as well as the apple 23″?

i did some pretty intense searches through prior threads and kept finding that LCDs were some what iffy for color correction. has that been the case?

thank you again for the helpo,
