Hi all. We’re in the process of acquiring a Panasonic HVX200 and getting both our edit suites retrofitted for the camera. But we can only go bare bones for now. So, question is…what video monitors are recommended in order to view the HD footage from the HVX200 on a FCP timeline? We’re looking to spend around $6,000 total for two monitors. I was looking at two 21-inch Sony LUMA monitors (model # Sony LMD-212S), but I’m not sure anymore, because these were monitors that we considered back when we thought about getting into HDV. But now we’re getting into the HVX200 instead. Now, how would we hook the monitors up? Do we need any kind of “AJA” card or something, that goes inside the Mac? Either way, right now, we can only purchase one camera with a few cards, one P2 Store, and two HD-compatible video monitors. We’ve already acquired dual 23″ cinema displays and 1TB Apple XSERVE raids for both rooms, so we’re almost good to go (I think).

    Thanks for your help.

You want a monitor for color correction, right? Then you will need an HD card from either AJA or Decklink (really no difference in quality) and an HD monitor. The cheapest true HD monitors you can get will run you close to $10,000. But I have found that the Sony PVM-14L5 with HD SDI option looks DARN good. 800 scanlines and looking at it sitting atop the Sony HD CRT at NAB and I could barely tell the difference.

You are looking at about another $6k….$2k for the HD card (unless you get a bare bones Decklink) and $3k for the monitor and HD SDI option.

Have not heard anything good about those for Color Correction. They can’t display true black as black, it’s always a dark grey which affects all the colors in your image.

Sony PVM-14L5/1 multiformat is the way to go for true color correction and you can easily afford two of those for less than $4k and then if you want something larger for clients or your editor to view, pick up the Panasonic Professional Plasma series monitor. I have a 50″ Panny to go with our Sony PVM’s and it looks fantastic. Prices are outstanding on those too. We run a Sony 20″ and a Sony 14″ in our edit suites and unfortunately the 20″ models are gone.

As for the card, go with the AJA Kona series. LHe or Kona 3 will both work for HD monitoring the big difference is the Kona 3 gives you Up and Down Convert along with 720 – 1080i cross convert.

I too am curious about HD monitoring and wonder just what the deficiencies are for color correcting with the Decklink/Multibridge Express setup.

I do know some are using the eCinema EDP100 with an apple 23″ HD cinema display for color correcting and they are very pleased with that, mind you it isn’t exactly a cheap alternative.

I also understand that the Panasonic BT-LH1700W 17″ LCD monitor is regarded as questionable for color-correcting, but does have a nice price point.

Interesting to see what everyone’s thoughts are and what might be on the horizon, with the advent of HD aquisition becoming so prevalent.

    Cheers

    ohhh, the humanity…

the PVM 14″ is about $1500 then the HD card is another $1500. so that’s like $3k… is there something i’m missing on the 2-PVM’s for less than 4k? is there an HD downconvert setting that is usable for CC?

i will be posting a doc in DVCProHD (my first HD project), and need a monitor for HD… but there’s a good chance i will be going out of house for a final transfer/color correction. if $ were no object, it wouldn’t be an issue, but for now that’s not the case.

so, is there a decent (relatively) inexpensive HD monitor out there? a computer monitor?

as always thank you for the help…
