If you have a 5 minute clip and want .05 seconds of it, then open it in the trimmer, select the little bitty portion you want, and drag it to the timeline. It’s no big deal to add a small portion of a clip.

No. You’ll get a still only. You might consider using Boris as a standalone so you can see the video in the composite window. It will still WORK fine as a plugin, though – you just have to live with the limitations.

Holding down CTRL-SHIFT when starting Vegas should reset it to “factory defaults”.

The option to change the timeline to the top or bottom should be in Options – Preferences – Display tab which has an option that reads “Display timeline at bottom of main window” (at least the Pro version does).

Auto ripple works however you have it set to work. There’s a little drop-down arrow beside the auto ripple button on the toolbar. Check to see how you have it set – it can do anything from a single track to everything.

Personally, I use auto ripple turned OFF. If I want it to ripple, I use the “Post Auto Ripple” options. Do a search in the help file for more details.

To get transparency, render as UNCOMPRESSED and then go into the settings and make sure the option to preserve transparency is turned on.

You can add a VEG file directly to a new timeline. Do a search for “Nested VEG file”.

No. The “Custom Command” functionality was added in Vegas 8. What that feature does is not possible in previous versions.

Here’s how I do it. I place the clip(s) on the timeline and put regions around all the sections I want to keep naming those regions. I then use the “Extract Good Clips” tool in Excalibur which creates sub-clips and also moves those “good” pieces to a new track. Then I delete the original track.

You could do similar in the trimmer. Select a good region and create a new sub-clip. Repeat for the rest of that clip in the trimmer. No need to bounce back and forth – just stay in the trimmer until all of the good pieces are selected.

The trimmer can be used for that. You can create sub-clips of the good clips and name them so they’re easily identifyable
