Options – Prefereces – check the option to Make the space bar/F12 Play/Pause instead of Play/Stop
In reality, you’re wanting it to “pause” which keeps the cursor at the current location instead of “stop” which returns the cursor to where you started playing. By default, the space bar does a play/stop and the ENTER key does a play/pause. Just change the above option and the space bar will then play/pause.

If the “white” area isn’t transparent in the image, you can use the ChromaKey tool to change the white to transparent. If it’s an easy shape to follow (i.e. rectangular), you might find it easier to use the Bezier Masking tool in Pan/Crop.
Personally, I’d make sure the background is transparent in the original image. Save it as a PNG or PSD (which preserve transparency), and then load it on the timeline. If the background then isn’t transparent, right-click it, go into properties, and change the alpha channel mode.

If you don’t uncheck that box, you’ll only get the area in the selection area. If when unchecked you’re getting a large blank area at the end, then you have something else on the timeline AFTER that big blank space. If you click on the “go to end” button (or press “End”) it will take you to the end of the project. Then you can see exactly where actual end of the project is. I’m betting you’ll find a sliver of footage there!

Worst case, holding down CTRL-SHIFT when starting VMS should reset it back to factory defaults.

I and O will create a selection area on the timeline if the “collapse loop region” option is turned off. You can change the in/out points by clicking on the yellow heads and moving them. If you click somewhere else and drag, it will create a different selection area. Pressing the backspace key will rotate through the last five selection areas.

Pressing “I” and “O” works as well. Find the in point and press “I”. Then find the out point and press “O”.
The only time I know of when this won’t work is if you have the “Collapse Loop Region” turned on. I have the option turned on so I and O don’t work for me.
