We ALWAYS run with the “abort capture on dropped frames” OFF!!. We don”t trust it and we do some serious network fast turn-around stuff as well as scripted programming and documentaries. I never see dropped frames caused by the digitizing.

Bought the Kona 3! Also bought the G5 Quad and my vendor is going to take it back soon when the new G5 **** is released. Will use my Io for analog conversion into K3 to uprez. Talked to Rudy at AJA today, is he cool or what. Honest and wants to help. And best of all after a long absence, I got to gear from TONY!….I’m gonna meet you one day and we’ll realize we’ve met before.

Format is mostly DVCProHd 720p/24 and 1080i/24. Will do HD Cam work as well. It lookas if the Blackmagic has more versatility as far as inputs go and it seem to monitor with DVI out. I’ve always been an AJA fan but can only spend this money once.

I think Matt from Focus explained it well to me earlier in that it appears to be a Final Cut issue with the flagged frames being detected when importing and selecting the “delete duplicate frames” in the import window. It doesn’t always happen, which can be frustrating, but all this, I’m afraid. is to be expected with new technology and multiple vendors. The more I use the Firestore the more comfortable I am with it. I do not delete the original media until I’ve checked all file switch-over points. That will change. I just got caught in a big, long shoot in harsh conditions with a new out-of-the-box device. I had not planned it that way. Originally the Firestore and Citidisk were to be delivered in Feb/March which would have given us all time to de-bug things. As it was. I received my Firestore 4 days before leaving for a three and a half week shoot. We had a terabyte of storage and it turned out not to be enough so we had to start deleting original, backed up P2 and Firestore files to make room for the last week and a half’s shoot material. I still get an ocasional drop-out. I think that is a bigger problem at the moment for me than the dropped frames as I can re-import the material or use the Panasonic frame rate converter if all else fails, but dropped frames are there to stay. I am waiting for Panasonic to ship new units to my vendor and I am going to get a replacment unit in hopes of no more problems. I get freezes in the menus and other random stuff but I still believe in the product and the technology.

You are so correct and soo many people have denied that this exists. I too am in hell because of this. We shot nearly 9 hours of interviews with the FS100 before we discovered this and are really up a tree trying to fix it.

You are one intense Mo Fo! I love your energy and conviction. I have an Io which years ago saved my ass after trying for a month to play out a sequence with the Igniter. Truthfulkly Bob, I hadn’t considered the K3 as it isn’t interested in the analoge stuff but your idea of Io to K3 makes perfect sense. I used a Kona 3 on Nascar earlier this year and it truly rocks! I will use your reply as the roadmap and buy the K3 as I’m a big AJA believer. Thanks for taking the time and don’t forget the medication!! (hope you laughed too)

I did some fancy Velcro art on both ends of the FW cable that makes it snug, and I’ve tested it in the field and works great. Also, I make a foam cradle for the bottom portion of the Firestore as much of the time it hangs from the tripod or dangles from my shooting belt. I was afraid it was getting beat up just hangin there and this helps eliminate damage.

I haven’t had the camera set in 24pA. Can you explain why it would matter to change to the 24pAdvanced setting. I am trying to learn everything I can about this process. How would the Advanced setting affect the Firestore recording? I’m sure it is some simple thing like that you guys will enlighten me on and all this head-scratching will be over.
