Sorry for being late to this thread but I have to concur that the HD Log price is way too much and I agree with some that it should be a Panasonic item. It would help to propagate the P2 experience and make it easier. As an editor, I see the promise of the future of a tapeless world using the P2, or my new Firestore FS100 that arrives tomorrow. But it is flawed. Reel numbering in the field and carrying that numbering order over to the edit is fundamental. A big consideration for us is that the networks and distributors we deal with demand original camera masters be delivered with the show master. This has us scratching our heads and if the reel numbering isn’t logical and traceable, we’re hosed. I think there needs to be a method of naming the card in camera so when dumping to whatever, it makes logical sense. For instance, Camera A reel 11 (or card 11) would be A11, or Day 3 reel 5 would be 305 et al. We’re making it work by spending way too much time on computers after the shooting and so far have archived to HDCam, but there has to be a better way.

I don’t want to look like I’m bashing, but I have two friends that own rental houses and I would not in a million years trust any of their techs to educate any of my crew. They are not familiar with the real world typically and do not know computers and how they relate to cameras. I have the same set-up, though have just ordered a Firestore, and after three days or so of making many mistakes, fiinally got it right and it now is a robust, quality system. As well, there is a piece of software called P2 Genie that automates the P2 to computer download, erasure of the card or P2 Store and ejects it, saving precious minutes each time. I know hind sight is lame, but with any new technology, double the effort to become aquainted. I once had a DP throw a hissy fit and made us rent a new Arri camera package. Once on location, he had nightmare problems for all of us with what were usually simple tasks with the old camera. I learned from that pocket book hit. The P2/P2 Store or direct to Final Cut process is the beginning of what will change the way we capture images forever. I was totally frustrated at first and feel like an old hand at it now, and I’m an editor! Anyway, sorry for the hit financially, but stay determined and keep the faith. It really does work.

Cable does work but I’ve notice a loss in signal strength and quality. I’m on backorder from Panasonic for the OEM part. Will test with ohm meter and report back.

True about the data rate. Found a good solution. Sonnet Technologies has a SATA raid that does port multiplying, meaning…….finally……..one Sata cable for 5 drives. Box is $500, 5-500gig drives at $400-450 each and for around $2500 a 4.5TB HD capable raid. Need their new SATA controller card of course but will handle 4 arrays, now we’re starting to get affordable big storage for HD.

You are my hero, and I especially like you in that red cape. All kidding aside, the Panasonic product rep had problems getting the calbe as well from Panasonic and he and I both ordered the cable you recommended. Many thanks, and if you need any editing questions answered………..I too have a cape, though now well pressed and a bit tired looking, but still good to go.

As an amendumn to last post, I contacted Panasonic service and the cable is back-ordered until at least May 7. Sure hope this third-party one works!

Hi Jan,
Many thanks for that part number. I’m ordering one anyway despite the cost as I need to have a backup from now on and in case the other doesn’t work. I think I mis-spoke when I said you said to call Tech Support as now I’ve read through the posts and my email and found the reason I called them. I had send a part request form to Panasonic PBTS Parts and gotten a reply this morning:
“What you need to do is call Technical Support at 1-800-524-1448 prompt 2 and
they can help you locate the part or part numbers you are looking for then you
can check back with us on pricing and availability.”Now that I’ve re-read your post with the part number I apoloigize for mis-stating and want you to know that I and I’m sure all here really appreciate your first-hand knowledge and understanding and hope to continue to tap into your knowledge in the future. So far, we love the camera though we’re still learning, but as an editor, the P2 card and hopefully soon to be released hard drive option is a blessing. No more mis-labeled tapes or having a PA look for hours for a tape thats in the box in the first place!!

Until our componet cable was destroyed, we ran the HD analog out to the Dell 2405 and it looked fantastic. I love this monitor and got it on sale at Dell’s website for $849 with 3 year warranty…..can’t beat that! We’re now desperatly trying to locate another componet cable but Panasonic does not know how to get one yet. Anyone with and idea how to get one (HVC200 componet cable) would be a hero.
