Just got off the phone with Panasonic Tech Support as Jan had recommended and they know nothing about the cable or how to order it. They have no part number available as of yet but say they are working on it and took my contact info. Jan, if you’re listening, I’ll be watching here to see if you can come up with any info as well. I ordered one of the cables shown here earlier but the Panasonic Tech guy claims the pin out is different. Ours was destroyed by careless grip and we’re desperate to get another to see HD out on a set monitor. So far, we’ve not come up with a way to see an HD picture any larger than the capture window in FCP without the cable.

Mike,

I’m getting ready to capture hours of footage directly from the camera to FCP and noticed the disparity in the Sequence settings (DVCProHD 720p24 defaults to 960×720) and the capture settings (DVCProHD 720/24p defaults to 1280x 720). Will FCP play back properly this way and is this the resizing you’re talking about?

So I hear what all you guys are saying about not recording MFX files to HD and it makes sense, but I just got off the phone with the Focus Enhancements people https://www.focusinfo.com/dynassets/documents/products/FS-100-DS-10Nov05-US.pdf and they’re claiming the new FS 100 will do so. So what’s this mean really? Are they converting to MFX files once they get the data stream from the camera? It sure is confusing to an old editor like me!

The more I look into this CitiDisk product the more questions I have. They are not real clear on what they really record onto HD.

I’m expecting my camera delivery any minute now so this question may be pre-mature……..but is it true that I can record 720p DVCProHD directly into my Final Cut HD system via Firewire? Man, if not I’m in trouble. As I understand it. I can shoot 720p/60i out of the camera and have FCP do the 3:2 pulldown into 720p/24. I’ve set this workflow up as a temporary measure until there is reliable/affordable HD storage. I did order 2 4g P2 cards but am getting ready to start shooting a documentary in hurricane ravaged Mississippi and hope not to have to keep downloading every several minutes.

All this information is very appreciated by the way.

Jeremy, thanks very much. This make total sense. I think the CitiDisk unit I’m
anxiously awaiting has to do the same until Panasonic releases a couple of
codec items to them and they can implement all DvcProHD and variable recording formats
onto the disk drive. My camera arrives tomorrow and will try your suggestd
setup. I too am a SATA fan but am hoping to record to a FW800 7200 rpm
16mg cache drive in the field. It should be ok and I’ll transfer to our big
raids when I get back to LA. I’m probably going to shot 20-30 hours of stuff in 720p/24 so I have a feeling I’ll
be buying more drives via the internet while we’re down there shooting.

Thanks Lawerence. Makes perfect sense. I’m unsure whether the camera will output the 720p/24 data stream via the firewire. I know at one point the firewire output was limited but I’ve also read that it has changed. I think at worst I’ll have to shoot in 720p/60 and have FCP do the pulldown during capture. Really anxious for the hard disk solution or at least reasonably priced P2 media.

I have wished for years that FCP could be as robust and powerful as Avid and am still waiting. Use Avid every day and FCP for side jobs and a documentary film I cut last year (writing this while digitizing on FCP right now). FCP is clunky, crashes often and the Media Managment is terrible. I’ve invested 20K into our high-end FCP system and will agree it’s a decent value and makes more profit looking at the surface, but Avid is very reliable, can do basic things like dirt removal from film that FCP can’t and can handle the pounding two shifts a day give it. I wish FCP was there and the Avids would be history. Yes it is difficult to drift between the two. I have laminated keyboad maps and cheat sheets for FCP taped up above my edit screens. Wish FCP had ability to map more on screen buttons.
