About how far away are we from the final updated release of the AJA lo control panel? I know FCP 5 is coming, is this something that’s holding up it’s release?
Also. are their any function gains to be had with the AJA lo system when upgrading to FCP 5?
Thanks,
James –

May 8, 2005 at 3:07 amHi-
The next release of the Io Control Panel is due very soon, and there is also a new Io family driver rev coming.
The next verison of the Io Control Panel introduces procamp controls, audio channel mapping, timing output controls, and more. AJA engineers are finishing this up now, and it will be going to beta very shortly, so release is not far away.
The next version of the Io/Io LA/Io LD driver software introduces 23.98 frame rate support, reduced latency, plus Tiger compatibility (which means multi-channel audio input, multicam, and more). This release also introduces Soundtrack Pro video-out support, and integration with other ProApps. This driver is due from Apple when FCP 5 ships at the end of this month.

May 8, 2005 at 9:37 amThanks 🙂 Sounds like the AJA lo still has alot of life in it.
One functions I’m looking to have available, is the ability to control the video outputs aspect ratio from the software. I work with 16:9 Anamorphic DV video at 23.98, but I don’t have a 16:9 capable monitor.
I’ve used Synthetic Aperture’s “Echo Fire” software with the AJA lo, which allows for the video outputs aspect ratio format to be software selectable, (Standard, Letter Boxed, 16:9)
Since you are adding the 23.98 viewing compatability, it would be a valued addition if your control panel could incorporate the widescreen video output option as a software function.
Again thank you for your reply.

You can easily create a letterboxed image via FCP by dropping your 16×9 anamorphic sequence into a 4:3 sequence and via the motion tab- distort- aspect ratio input -33.33 which will create a letterbox output.
But the best solution is to invest in a monitor which already has a 16×9/4:3 function. Consider buying a used monitor if you can’t afford a new monitor.

May 8, 2005 at 9:11 pmHey Tony S.
I’ve tried that with FCP, but it’s such a technical hassle going back and forth between timelines.
Since FCP 5 will be dealing alot more with native HDTV, which is a widescreen image, I’m sure the issue of a 16:9 viewing aspect ratio will be coming up quite a bit. Even though the AJA lo is not HDTV capable, it can still be used to monitor the video output at the reduced level (I assume). It then would just need the widescreen perspective of HDTV to make it usable.
I’m looking into gettingt a true 16:9 based production monitor (when they get cheaper). I’ve never liked the 4:3 versions that can be switched to 16:9, it always seems like your getting less of a image to view.
Appreciate the input.

May 9, 2005 at 2:20 amWell, keep it up! New value added services from a 1.5 year old box is a great thing and why I continue to buy and recommend AJA products.
