Just to add to Jeff’s answer, your Mac can only write files to a FAT32 HD that are 4 Gbytes or less in size. So if you’re thinking of copying video files over to the FAT32 HD just break them up into pieces less than the 4 gig limit.

I would highly recommend you buy an inexpensive MiniDV palmcorder with a firewire connection for your tape capture into your computer. There will be no loss in quality. You don’t need to wear out the tape transport of your XL1s by using it as a tape deck.
I use a small Sony camcorder for capturing all my footage for FCP5 without any sync issues. I’ve captured well over an hour of footage in one go without any problems with audio drift. The video footage is from my XL2, GL2 and Sony PD170. I think it’s just a matter of making sure that your FCP capture presets exactly mirror what’s actually on the tapes.

Yes, the XL2 has a 24pA mode. Use it exactly the same way you would use it on the DVX100.

I use the Panasonic Master series MiniDV tapes with great results. Apparently the Sony Master series are equally as good.

Down conversion is full screen anamorphic from the SDI port. Actually, all outputs from the XL-H1 are active at the same time. You can also output HD and SD at the same time, which is a first for an HD cam in this price range and class. Just remember that the SDI output is video only. There is no timecode or audio output in the SDI video signal. The other BNC connections handle those two things.

If you’re referring to the project file, then yes I keep that file separate from the actual project media. I have a folder in my startup drive Applications folder labeled ‘Final Cut Projects’. I also back up the project files at the end of each day to another separate hard drive and/or removable media drive. Project pictures, graphics, etc. are also backed up to another drive.

I’m assuming that the XM2 will basically be the same internally as the NTSC version GL2, which shoots in either interlaced mode or in “frame mode”. Frame mode combines the two interlaced fields into one before it’s recorded to tape. The popular belief is that a considerable amount of picture resolution is lost with this method. Frame mode is not progressive scanning, which records one complete picture for every frame without having to combine the interlaced fields. Progressive scanning is not possible without using progressive scan CCD’s, which the GL2/XM2 does not have. Frame mode on the GL2 is recorded at 30fps. whereas the XM2 will shoot in the PAL equivelant of 25 fps.
