Organising media
Just curios how you guys organise your media. I keep my timecode based media on my capture scratch and everything else on an internal drive. However i am concerned as to the right way to store clips that have been exported from fcp and worked on in other programs and re-exported (eg after effects). Do you guys store this media on your capture scratch too or on your media drive ie my internal drive (where all you pics music etc goes).
Enquiring minds wanna know.

I keep ALL my media on my external drives. The captured footage in the capture scratch folders. The music I use in music folders labelled for what show they are used in…same with sound effects. Stills in a still folder labelled for the show they are used in.
When I export footage for AE (I really need automatic duck for this, but can’t afford it yet) I export it to my internal (if I have the room) for my After Effects work. But then the resulting comp I put in a COMP folder with the project name on the scratch drive.
Comiing from an assistant editor background, from companies that can have 10 projects rolling at a time, I am a STICKLER for organization and folders and sub-folders and keeping things on drives with the project files.

I’m with Shane. Any media goes in a folder on the media drive.

Ah I see but what happens if your external drive goes down, do you have your project saves for fcp on a seperate drive to enable you to batch capture again. Thanks for the reply guys.

If you’re referring to the project file, then yes I keep that file separate from the actual project media. I have a folder in my startup drive Applications folder labeled ‘Final Cut Projects’. I also back up the project files at the end of each day to another separate hard drive and/or removable media drive. Project pictures, graphics, etc. are also backed up to another drive.
